For reasons not fully understood, the clouds' brightness wiggles up and down in step with solar activity, with fewer clouds forming when the sun is most active.

It's not all that "not fully understood".

High magnetic solar activity (indicated by high levels of sunspots, which we don't currently have) correlates well with low levels of clouds.

There's a book on the phenomenon, experimentally demonstrated in a laboratory, which I can't recall the title of right now, something along the lines of "Killer Stars".

I'll go ahead and blame Sarah Palin and the Tea Party for this.

Don't leave out possible witchcraft at the hands of Christine O'Donnell.

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

Reminds me of the shining portion of vapor trail following a twilight space shuttle launch. The white cloud was shining brightly for an eerily long time as the rest of the vapor trail dissipated.

My aforementioned friend has this one criticism of the story:

Article says, “Colder temperatures allow more water to freeze, while an increase in water vapor allows more ice clouds to form.”

Nope. Increase in water vapor doesn’t have anything to do with ice cloud formation. There is no water vapor at such heights. Clouds there are necessarily ice of some form given the temperature. After all, the article says, “The clouds form only when temperatures drop below minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 130 degrees Celsius), when the scant amount of water high in the atmosphere freezes into ice clouds.” The scant amount of water can only exist as ice, ice in different forms depending upon temperature, since at that height the temperature never rises above -100 degrees.

This is what he said about it two years ago:

Obviously, I’m observing the same thing. I call the high cirrus, “wakefield”, because they have a pattern that’s reminiscent of water flow aft of a boat hull in motion in the shape of solitons. Another example is seen in laser wakefield acceleration.

For several days last week they disappeared and then today they reappeared. There were two levels, one at about 6 kilomters and the other at 10. The higher have the new development.

I claim these new development higher cirrus follow a pattern now existent for 3 years that represent beginning evidence of a major reversal of the last 30 years of weather. For the refraction indicated in those photos ice crystals have to be super-cooled and tumbled which shows the cirrus are stratospheric and therefore are intercepting UV photons not absorbed by ozone.

UV has been high for 15 years and this has caused much higher surface temperatures. The reason for high UV is low ozone density. What mediates ozone? Energetic catalyst. Maybe cosmic rays and solar wind in some reinforcing combo that changes the rate free O oxidizes O3 into O2, or availability of O. Specifically, O3 is quasi stable so that some high speed ion, proton, through its resulting muon shower which brings down its activation energy threshold, increases the O3 -—> O2 reaction.

What’s it mean? Cold surface temperatures, cold surface waters, and that means no hurricanes and horrendous winters.

When I was a kid, I was taught these were called noctilucent clouds. I guess since nobody in public school studies Latin anymore, they had to drop that and use “night-shining.” Just doesn’t sound as cool.

I believe it is temperature AND pressure related. Higher altitudes have lower pressures. The Temperature drops off very fast with height, then starts increasing due to ozone warming. It is about -47 C where the passenger jets fly at just 36,000 feet. At 135,000 feet it is around - 23 C due to ozone warming.

This winter at least we are starting to hear Thor's Hammer more often during snow storms. Thunder Snow from the Pagan God is increasing. Grew up in Michigan and never heard Thunder Snow.

I have a physicist friend who says these clouds are very rare in the winter and presage significant global cooling.

Really? Does he use entrails or tea leaves?

That's the first time I've seen the "sacrilege" tag.

These mysterious clouds form between 50 and 53 miles (80 and 85 kilometers) up in the atmosphere, altitudes so high that they reflect light long after the sun has dropped below the horizon. DeLand, an atmospheric scientist with NASA... has found that night-shining clouds... are forming more frequently and becoming brighter... in data from instruments that have been flown on satellites since 1978.
Thanks The Comedian. Looks like a job for the global warming shills!

Interesting. A possible harbinger of Global Cooling (TM).

On the other hand could it mean that warmer oceans are putting more evaporation into the upper atmosphere?
