Most likely the comet head has evaporated. There are tens of thousands of telescopes around the world looking for comets.

For the most part, the astronomical community has been very responsible and subdued about the threat from celestial objects, despite efforts from the popular press to drum up hysteria, like they did for Covid and Global Warming. Astronomy is such a fascinating and difficult enough field of study that it hardly requires lurid press for attention.
