I think the short answer is that the existance of anti energy radicals does not exclude the existence of epic, life altering mismanagement in the nuke industry and in particular, Fukushima.

Legitimate public outcry (Tea Party, or those posting on FR re lies distortions surrounding nuclear energy) always attracts opportunists who wish to redirect public passion to their purposes. So you get freaks showing up at Tea Party events and the Dems say those freaks are the heart and soul of the ‘real’ Tea Party. I really don’t think a person has to be a secret anti-energy activist to object to three nuclear melt-downs, the lies and distortions coming out of those in charge, and the fact that there is no known resolution (no one has ever cleaned up a melt down before) The Japanese didn’t even have robots used for nuke disasters like the US and Europe have.
John Gofman was not against nuke power when he was busy helping discover radioactive isotopes. Then they asked him to study the hazards because he was a medical physician and he did so. He was horrified by the level of hazard he discovered. On a plane with others from the industry, he thought about the toxicity and wondered what kind of containment level would you need for fuel this toxic. He did ‘back-of-the-envelope’ calculations that figured out the max amount of fuel released into the environment that could be deemed ‘safe’ and then figured out the containment percentage (I am NOT paraphrasing this well!) So basically he calculated something like a 99% or some other very high rate of engineering capacity to ensure that not more than 1% or less of radioactive isotopes would be released into the environment. He had years of lab experience and they have values for containment like that so he knew from working in a lab that the radioactive material could not feasibly be contained at the required level. He asked a nuke engineer sitting next to him “How much containment could you engineer into a nuke plant” and the engineer just kept telling him ‘however much you need - you tell us what number we need and we engineer to that level’ and Gofman said no, he himself worked in a lab for many many years and that based on experience, you’ll never get the level of containment he calculated and the nuke engineer disagreed. Gofman sat back stunned that the attitude of engineering was that if it appeared in specifications, engineering would build it even though historically, that level of perfection can never, and has never been attained. The lying and manipulation of the budding nuke industry/gov agencies, his own work on radiation health effects (years of research), and the hubris of those who insisted they would simply contain hazardous materials as needed even if the required levels required levels of perfection never attained before in engineering, - these slowly brought him around to being against nuclear energy. He wasn’t anti energy - he hated the denials of reality (health hazards, containment requirements). And as things stand now - I don’t think he was wrong. But once he finally turned against nuclear energy because of his personal experience - it became popular in the nuke industry to dismiss him as just one of those activists with an agenda. There’s a veiled innuendo in some posts that implies he warped his research to fit his agenda when in fact his research and experience being abused by officials in the nuke industry created his world view.
So mismanagement and deception on the part of the nuke industry motivates some people to want to halt it’s development but the nuke industry implies that it is impossible for a reasonable person to have objections to their behavior and that by default, all criticism emanates from irrational, unreasonable, agenda driven ignorant people out to destroy the American way...hey...they are beginning to sound like Obama supporters who imply all objections to Obama are racist.

I have been accused of being anti energy and I know in my heart I am not. I am against being down wind of failed reactors pumping out hazardous radiation around the clock for the foreseeable future without any known technology to halt it. Do anti energy activists exist? Yes. But the the existence of agenda driven anti energy activists does not exclude the existence of legitimate public ire at the unholy combination of government and industry. Early in the Fukushima disaster, a woman who had been assigned to work in the Chernobyl cleanup advised people in Japan told the Japanese civilians - ‘Get out while you can. The combination of the government and nuclear industry is too strong for you.” When has leveraging an industry with the protection of the government like this been a good idea? What would nuclear energy be like if it didn’t have the government to protect it? That is the issue to me - gov got involved because of weapons. Giving the gov an industry to nurture and protect from the will of the citizens and then asking the government to watchdog itself does not work - no matter how many anti energy activists are sneaking around writing things right now.

I just saw your comment by accident - I haven’t been keeping up with this topic due to so many other things in my life.

Reading a book by Gofman years ago helped me undertand nuke power. And the realtime Fukushima events have shown him to be truthful. The idol worshippers of nuke power are also revealed to be what they are.

I am flattered by the praise but must point out that many other websites, like Ex-SKF.blogspot.com and Fairewinds.com, provide more expertise and better written materials than I can. I am continuing to learn, myself, so I don’t consider myself an expert to follow but appreciate having the company of others learning along with me.

Dear ransomnote since I am lazy I do not have to work to get the information. The Spirit will guide me in all truth. Me saying "I do not know but, Thank God, God knows" is also very liberating and where I like to be. When I read your posts my spirit tells me this is truth. This could change however, I have only a few convictions.

I do appreciate the work you have done to uncover the truth. I just have to post a few questions on FR and I get all kinds of answers.

Galatians 5:25 (NIV) 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

I just realized that I replied to your post intended for another FReeper. Sorry - I think I need glasses!
