I work in a decent sized simple cycle gas turbine power plant. 500mw
We’ve been taken out by lightning. The last time for 5 days due to a lightning strike which crippled our operating control system. Spare parts are non existant for these controls. 1990 vintage. Burned out units were sent into a third party for complete refurb.
The lightning strike hit 150 yards away from the operating computer control system. The energy traveled through very small wiring underground.
An EMP/Carrington type event would put us out longer, if not for good. Thousands of these wires snake throughout our facility. Most are connected to some sort of electronic control device.
Let alone the very large power transformers, which would soak up that type of energy and fry the coils inside. Rendering them inop. Bad JuJu
We were able to get parts fixed for our system, due to the power being on. Everywhere..
However- No power. No transportation. Comms. ETC; Nobody is going to get their stuff fixed. Let alone I cant run the machines due to the lack of pressurized nat gas @ 1000psi. Gas compressors in the pipelines run off of electricity or smaller gas turbines. They aren’t running either because they are in the same boat my facility would be in.
I could go further down that rabbit hole, but it does scare me :)
Just my humble opinion.

Retired congressman Bartlett says we do not make any large transformers in the US. Knowing how to make a mill run with water wheel and geared torque shafts will be most useful ... provided little barry bastard boy’s sons don’t murder the golden goose in their continuous rampages.

I think people are wildly overestimating when they speak of the world being thrown into the dark ages. There is just too much knowledge already out there to let us fall too far.

True, but a lot depends on how the infrastructure is affected by any magnetic anomaly. If there is any sort of widespread EMP, most vehicles would be rendered useless, as well as large machinery With 'just in time' inventory the rule these days, the loss of the ability to deliver goods means after a few days, most people can't obtain food in the supermarkets, and will simply starve, over time.

People who live outside the cities might have the chance to grow their own food, or be able to take advantage of farmer's markets, but inside large cities the situation would be dire.

Over time, the knowledge would allow those left to re-build, but there would be many fewer to do that work, and they would be spread out over a wide area, and communication might be difficult.

Eggs Ackley. Only single police force members will even be tempted to stick to the drills ... those MRAPs were not for the start of the chaos, they were ordered to give the surviving oligarchs a force projection capability AFTER the collapse, chaos, starvation, disease and murder has run the larger part of reducing the populace. Those billions of rounds of pistol ammo are for sidearms for the oligarchs and their families, and the security forces to protect same.

Lots of gas compressor stations are run off of natural gas compressors,..old reciprocating engines. We used to have one down rebuilding it, while the other operated since the 40s.

EMP might effect microelectronic circuits more than larger voltage systems. Controls might get fried, but with sequence of ops and ladder diagrams they are easily implemented by any competent electrical engineer.

I really liked the phrase,....”back to the age of agriculture”. I guess that means we risk becoming Aggies,...OHMYGOD!!!!!

Thought I might add,
I get a phone call from our regional electrical transmission grid operator everytime there is an X class or higher solar flare/CME. They think about it too.

Bill Gates would be happy, he’s all for population control.
I’m surprised that the stupid Dem congresswoman (sorry, triply redundant) doesn’t blame man made global warming for this. The only solution of course is to raise taxes.
Hey maybe staring WW3 is just the ticket for some emp bombs.

I’ve got a garden out back... Does that make me an Aggie? Man I hope not. Mrs Bo is a Badger. She no like da Aggies.

Protection llogic and tripping schemes are for those normal/abnormal anomalies. Lightning arrestors are mechanical protection devices. I don’t believe they would save these larger transformers or generators during a sustained surge.
+1 on the old recips! I wish there were more of these type of facilities around to back up all of this high speed low drag stuff we use to make the world the way it is.

Well, I suspect that those of us in the rural areas of flyover country will fare better than the urban dwellers.

Since the urban areas tend to be populated by quite a few liberals..... well you finish the sentence.LOL

I don’t consider electricity a necessity of life, it’s a really nice convenience that I would not like to do without, but we have had to do just that for a week or so at a time over the years.

It wasn’t a big deal. Just fix meals the right size so you don’t have leftovers to refrigerate. What you have to have to survive is shelter, water, food, waste disposal and security. Everything else is icing on the cake. JMHO.

Anyone who doesn’t have the book EATING OFF THE GRID might want to get it, especially if they are concerned about the Grid going down, and the negative impact of that.

We pretty much have all the essentials covered where we live for an EMP attack. Still have a few things to do for earthquake, fallout from suitcase nuke, and economic collapse.

Some of us can build a generator without relying on store-bought stuff.

Some of us have lived as mountain men for years at a time, at a mid-1800s level of technology.

With all due respect - and stipulating that you can, in fact, build a generator - you're still going to need fuel to power that generator. Have you built a petroleum-processing plant?

And you're going to need roads not traffic'ed by bandits to get that fuel transported to you

Heck, even the 1800's mountain men carried guns that were not homemade, and I suspect that they didn't make their own gunpowder.

I'm not saying that you personally can't survive a new Carrington Event ... I'm just saying that you're going to be stepping over a *whole* lot of bodies (probably my own body included!)

One of the generators I built was powered by a bicycle out of the junk pile. It's enough for my needs.

I have lived the mountain man thing winter and summer, and know what it takes.

You might be surprised at how many folks can get along just fine after they adapt.

somewhere someplace there is a record of radical leftists talking about the need to extinguish millions of people....its this kind of total disregard of human life that is worrisome, because someone might actually try it...

I’m no pilot but I understand the concept of lift, drag, and thrust.

I'm ahead of the game. I practice this every couple of days when the lights go out.

No, but most any redneck can build a 'corn processing plant' : ) And Redneck Tech has proven itself over and again (and on-going).

Besides, electricity is overrated. It's nice, but not needed.

There is a 100% chance that within 150 years, everyone, every man woman and child that is alive in the world today will be dead!

Untrue. They may find a way to drastically extend lifespans.
