14 I am right now sitting at work less than a quarter mile from where this happened. The old house burned about 10 years ago, Comet drive in across the street closes probably 20 years ago. The Comet gas station, restaurant, bait shop, pawn shop and convenience store is still open tho....

Thanks for sharing this info. I 1st learned of the Hodge's meteorite around 1967. I always wanted to go by the site where it landed. I saw it about 10 years ago in the Alabama Museum of Natural History in Tuscaloosa.

There is not really much to see. Just a sign on the side of the road. The gas station/pawn shop etc. across the road is pretty interesting tho. You can get pretty much anything you need there and a lot of things you don’t need....used to be owned by a friend, now it’s owned by a “Mr. Patel”. Nice guy, just doesn’t speak very good English.

It was a sad, sad day when they closed the Comet Drive In. Lotta good times there. There was an old dude there who was in charge of keeping everybody straight. Took his job very seriously. Had lot’s of fun trying to outwit him. Sneaking in and sneaking a beer and all. He was pretty slow tho. We’d see that flashlight coming, him yelling at you to stop and chasing us through the cars. I don’t think he ever caught anybody though. Not “inside” anyway. Caught a bunch sneaking in, in the trunk.

Toward the end, the Comet, like a lot of drive-ins, started showing soft porn just to stay in business. Friday they had a special. A carload could get in for 5 bucks. So, me and about 10 friends got loaded, then got loaded up in a van to go to the movie. Debbie Does Dallas. R rated version. So, we’re waiting in a long line of cars to get in. My drunk buddy say’s “must be a double feature”. I say “what do you mean”. He “I’ve heard of “Debbie Does Dallas” but never “Five Dollars a Carload”. Sure enough, right up there on the Marquee...dumbass

But there’s not really a lot to see.

Fascinating. I’ve been to Sylacauga, but didn’t know about this.

saleman, I’m looking to find a country place in Clay county, preferably away from Ashland or Lineville, with a good number of acres (10-30). PM me if you can point me to someone who could help me.

experienced meteorite finders never find a non-iron meteorite in their entire careers.

Yep. If they weed out everything that isn’t magnetic, they will never “find”/recognize a carbonaceous chondrite...

The point is that such finds are vanishingly rare, and essentially NEVER found by amateurs without an expert eye.

An amateur (or someone who finds a curious rock) may as well wonder if those hoofprints (in the US) were made by zebras.

Yeah. For someone of my skill level, I might recognize the the rocks on top of the snow could be from elsewhere...
