It definitely warrants a cigar. What Washington was saying was “we don’t want to immediately toss aside what few allies we may have at the moment, but we certainly don’t want to make anymore entanglements that’ll get us involved in someone else’s mess.” So, yes, he was pretty darn close to the Ron Paul foreign policy outlook. That depresses a lot of neocons of the Kristol/Krauthammer persuasion, I know. And my heart bleeds for them. (sarc)
The word “entanglements” was never used. Especially since the USA was born out of foreign entanglement per se.
Ron Paul is not a factor here. Washington was clear on his stance of the USA being “at all times ready for War”, knowing that no walls could be built around the USA that could not be besieged.
