a volcano that could wipe out U.S.

Or it could save human civilization from this catastrophic communist/muslim alliance that is hell-bent sending us into another Dark Age.

No worries...when obama hears about this in the news, he will sign an executive order banning all eruptions in Omerika.

“It is an underground cavern measuring some 55 miles by 20 miles and containing between 125 and 185 billion cubic miles of molten rock.”

That number does not look right.

Think of all the natural thermal energy that could be harvested.

But you could heat every home in the U.S.A. with all the paper work you'd have to file with the e.p.a.

You may want to throw in some particulate face mask for yourself as well.

Yes, those 3M N95 disposable masks will be impossible to get *after* an eruption.

That number does not look right.

It can't be. If it was 55 miles long x 20 miles wide, it would need to be 113,636,363.6 miles deep to hold 125B cubic miles of anything. Cubic meters, maybe, but certainly not cubic miles.

A good prolonged eruption from either Ranier or Yellowstone would shift the perspective for an awful lot of people. If one considers the panic that followed the eruption of Mt. St. Helens or Pinatubo, then raise that to a magnitude ten to 100 times as large, and the long-term effects of a “volcanic winter”, Obamacare shrinks into insignificance.

You got that right. If the Yellowstone caldera goes, you may as well break out the good scotch, put on REM, and toast the end as it happens. Nobody east of the Mississippi survives that one.
