There is zero genetic or archaeological evidence for the bizarre cult of British Israelitism.
I know where my father's ancestors were living for hundreds of years. My mother's mother was third-generation American (3 German immigrant grandparents and 1 Irish immigrant grandmother). My mother's father had English, Scots-Irish, and maybe some Pennsylvania German ancestry. So I don't know if I would learn anything I don't already know by having the test done.

It costs less than $100 (perhaps plus shipping) to have your DNA tested by any of the big three American genetic testing companies, (Ancestry.com, 23and Me, and FamilyTreeDNA). However, many people who have been tested by more than one company have found their “ethnic heritage” predictions vary greatly. It is NOT an exact science. Part of the variation is attributable to ancestors moving around – your ancestral line may have been in Rome 2000 years ago, then in Saxony 1500 years ago, and in what is now Germany 1000 years ago prior to moving to England and finally to the US.
Yup, 68% haplogroup R1b like me.
The largest European immigrant group to the US is German, not English/Irish/Scot, like I thought.

Those who tested a decade ago should upgrade. Amazing progress has been made since then. For example, autosomal DNA testing finds cousins (up to about fifth cousins, and less reliably back to about tenth cousins) along all lines, not only fathers father’s father’s line (Y-DNA) or mother’s mother’s mother’s line (mtDNA).
You might be surprised? DNA doesn’t respect National Borders, no joke. It stunned me.
I just had my old 12 marker test upgrade to a 37 marker test.
We've managed to connect this DNA to my sister's geno work and it led us in a different direction than expected.
So who was more likely to get the women? The big brawny Saxon warriors or the smaller britons, celts and welsh?
I did the ancestry, my nephew did 23 & me; they both had similar results; claimed our people northwest Euros, not English. I did find another relative with similar DNA as mine on ancestry. We both had the same great grandfather and I never even knew the guy. The guy was from Pittsburgh, (where I originated) so I sent him a note on ancestry. He called me and I’m sending him a copy of our great granddad’s civil war discharge which I have on the wall. Funny thing, the guy was surprised to find a relative out in the sticks along the upper Yukon in Alaska. I was surprised to find he didn’t hunt or fish and was a democrat, say it aint so????????? Anyway, we’re sending picts now. I have found out more about my ancestors from 100 year old books that people did on their ancestry, and they were also ancestors of mine,books were reprinted. So type in your name on bing and look for 100 year old books about your family name.
Those could also be the ancient Iberians, who with similar groups inhabited Europe before the Germans or Romans or Celts came on the scene.
It's certainly possible that the ancient pre-Celts who got pushed down into Spain by subsequent arrivals and those who were pushed into Ireland or Wales or Scotland had similar DNA.
My neighbor who is Texas English, claims they only married other English people for generations in texas. He had 72% English ancestry, not Anglo-Saxon, ect. He told me he had higher % of PURE, pure I tell ya English bloodlines than most people in England today; all quite humorous anyway you look at it.
So if one wants something better than ancestry.com’s DNA test;;; Who do you suggest. This dna/family tree is a sickness for sure.
