Yet the enviro - NAZI’s (Center Biological Diversity) denies that it ever happened or had the effect it had on Cochise's WATER that it did.

There are a pair of largely granite peaks southeast of Bisbee. At first glance, they look like two almost identical peaks right beside each other but on closer inspection, it is obvious the there was originally one peak separated over time by a transform fault.

I consider myself pretty good in American history, yet had never heard of that particular earthquake. Perhaps because it occurred in a relatively sparsely popular area?
8.1 on the Richter scale would by about the same level as the San Francisco earthquake of 1906!
Why would the writer of the posted article write about an 1887 earthquake just now? Any particular reason for it?

There are some “hidden” faults with no or little recent history of movement. We don’t know much about them and about the possibility of dramatic movement. The 1887 earthquake was well reported at the time but the low population levels mean not much was destroyed. I’ve read at several sources about the Charleston destruction.

aka ‘Great Sonoran Earthquake’
Geologic Survey does not list it as high as an 8.

Correction to my post # 10:
Should be “...relatively sparsely POPULATED area”.
To: justiceseeker93
Is legend. Supposedly the quake covered a mine with an iron door. People still trying to find it.

I told my husband that we should batten down the hot water heater and the bookcases just like we did in California. He thinks we do not live in earthquake country anymore. But as I look around Tucson, with all the surrounding mountains, it is not hard to guess what action caused the up-welling in terrain. Actually, I think with the four mountains ranges all around us, it looks like we live in the center of a caldera.
On a personal note, I wrote a children’s continuing saga for a local elementary school, and it began with this earthquake and subsequent fire. I even made a pop-up book to show the boulders coming down and everything aflame.

We’re due for an 8 real soon. Hope it’s in D.C. while Congress is in session.
