I once saw a very YUGE or very close meteor pass through the atmosphere. I’m guessing it was YUGE and far away as it passed by VERY slowly.
It was a YUGE fireball moving south to north. A single object, not trailing other debris. We (3 of us) were heading due West on I 90 in NY heading toward Rochester. It was very early AM, still pitch dark out. It was visible for several minutes. It was low on the horizon. At first we thought it might be an airplane, but it didn’t lose altitude.
It was an AMAZING sight. SPECTACULAR! It must have been seen by hundreds of people on I90. We could find nothing on the news about it.
When was that big meteor shower, maybe a decade or so ago? I recall it was very cold weather so winter. I stayed up to watch, gloves and a heavy coat, froze my butt off but was rewarded. I had never seen anything like it, smoke trails, pretty constant barrage with several large enough to leave visible smoke trails and audible explosions. That was the most impressive astronomical thing I’ve ever seen. The only other noteworthy one I recall seeing here in NC was a bright blue meteor, appeared from our vantage point to be going straight down. Many joked that it was the fortunes of the UNC basketball program, they had an embarrassing loss that night.
Yes east to west :)
