The fact that McCain supports this pick troubles me the most.
I think Trump went for the one he is most sure gets through. The McCain message this morning was the confirmation of his decision. He can abide by a vote against by Paul but he could not sustain were two to defect like the commie from Maine and the Cow from Al. The extra bennie is those in the red states who are close to losing could lose their seats which would increase the advantage to something like 54 46 which would make Trump’s next pick invulnerable. So, the analogy to baseball is correct, just the wrong one. This is putting someone on base so your home run hitter can bring them around.
I think Kavanaugh was a brilliant choice. I’m thrilled to have someone of his intellectual quality and depth on the court. It needs history and clean thinking, and he’ll be a pwoerhouse in the long run.
Yes it is troubling but what is the alternative?? Go for someone that at least two GOPers will vote against?

I’m not going to hope for another persons demise, but isn’t it ironic that Kavanaugh will be torn apart in an attempt to find political bias, yet here sits Ruth Buzzie Ginsburg, 85 years old, refusing to retire and take her chances on dying in office just to deny someone like Trump the opportunity to appoint her successor. We’ll take those odds.
But it is the most transparently political decision a SCOTUS justice can possibly render.
You’re right, she should have done it when Obama would have made the appointment. Now she’s running against the clock.

A whole lot of people have gone broke both financially and politically trying to outsmart the Donald. He is truly a chessmaster.

I don’t. But that isn’t the way to plan.
I do a lot of project planning and the one fundamental planning tenet is the importance of the project item dictates how you should assess the probability of the predecessors. This one is critical so the plan should be for the almost worst case scenario.
The worst case scenario is, of course, that we have traitors in the Senate. But there is no plan that can deal with that contingency.

No, he doesn’t have time before the midterms to get a replacement in. But if they turn Kavanaugh down, and if the Senate gains Republicans, then they will get a replacement even better. If the Republicans lose the Senate, the situation will be very bad. The seat may sit empty for 2 more years.
There is way too much political theater in the ideological/gender make up of the court. Should Roe come before the court the optics will see the female jurists defending women’s rights. The court would benefit from a jurist who represents American women who are originalists and pro-life - in my experience, a majority. Hopefully next pick.
Honestly, I think the chance of Kavanaugh not getting confirmed is less than 5%, and here I’m being generous.
Donnelly, Heitkamp, Machin, McCaskil, and Nelson... One or two of these democrats will vote yes to confirm.
Murkowski and Collins will also vote yes. Since McCain likes him, Flake also votes yes.
Final vote: 53 Aye, 47 Nay.
And Expose the DummycRATS for who they are in November!
I think Kavanaugh is his pick. The bullpen will be called if Kavanaugh isn’t confirmed.
Trump wouldn’t play games with Brett’s family like that. He’s smart, but he’s not callous.
Just to add to my last post:
So, people like Collins and Murkowski may understand that logic. If they turn Kavanaugh down, they end up with either Barratt, who they like even less; or with a situation where the seat sits empty. Trump will not pick a Souter just to get him through the Senate.
By October, it will probably be evident that the Republicans will gain seats in the Senate, and the holdouts will come along.
