First of all, a good hunk of the games at Boardgamegeek are so-called Eurogames. Germany is the big kahuna in publishing these games. Many of these games have a European historic theme. So, to be authentic, you pretty much have to leave out left-handed Burmese lesbians.
I have noted a whole mess of board games coming out of Japan and Korea lately--that have Oriental themes.
Most of the games that I see unmoored from a historic theme go out of their way to be politically correct in the diversity of people portrayed. And I find it odd now if a woman's name is not used in play examples in the rule books.

Today I reaped the whirlwind by saying, after a bunch of folks whined about how in the 1920’s they couldn’t buy houses in one part of a community nearby - “When people complain today, I think it is pathetic compared to then.” Boy were folks mad!
