My dad passed at 98 yrs... his mother was born in 1876, when Ulysses Grant was President. My other three grandparents were born 1889, 1890.

My maternal grandmother remembered hearing the news when the Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight. She grew up with steam and horses powering everything, kerosene lighting. She lived to see the Moon landing.

“My parents were both born in 1918. They grew up in a different world.”

My Dad was born in 1918. WW II. They were real men and didn’t tolerate slackers.

“I want the straight dope” from Dad meant “I want the truth”.

Cecil the sea sick sea serpent? Sing along with Mitch was a better show than Ed Sullivan, and Soupy Sales was boring to me. I am so old I remember going to bed BEFORE McHales Navy came on, which was pretty early. Dad was a Navy man, and didn’t want to hear us kids during the show.

Most people know better than to post that info in a public forum for all to see.

Also most people know better than to ask.

My impression is that we have a fairly large range of ages and educational backgrounds.

What a difference a short 100 or so years makes and every 100 years it’s a whole new cast of characters.

general cluelessness about tech and contemporary pop culture

Please expound on your expertise in technology and why pop culture means anything. Some of us old farts developed the equipment, companies and 'tech' that enable these tools.

Yep. And if that 1890s cohort lived to 100 they witnessed more dramatic change than any other generation ever has.
