The SCOTUS needs to strike down many of these red flag laws. What other constitutional right can a citizen be denied without due process?
Also some states shift the burden of proof to the citizen to show he is not a danger to others. Also there are sometimes differing standards of proof to have your property (ie your guns) restored to you and that can take a lot of time and legal fees.
Also there is no penalty for knowingly filing a false report about someone in several states with these laws. Got a psycho ex girlfriend? Anybody have a grudge against you? They can knowingly file a false report about you, have the cops come kick in your door (maybe shoot you and/or your dog), take your property, and you then have to spend a lot of time and effort to get it back. And no consequences for them even if they did this with malice.

What they deserve and what happens to them are two different things. When there’s a knock on your door or the bell rings and you look outside and there’s multiple cops with weapons drawn and you open the door holding a shotgun, you’d have to be pretty low on the feeble-minded scale or dead drunk. Either way, you’re gonna be toast. If your synapses are firing in the green, you’re gonna acquiesce and live to fight another day. Dolt.

So far, the department of Pre-Crime is not doing so well.
If anyone ever reported me under that law, it would permanently end our relationship. Other than whatever legal process was needed to sever all ties, I would never interact with such a person again. I don’t care what explanation or excuse they might try to give, any relationship we previously had would be 100% over.

Red Flag Laws are stupid.
What would really help is the creation of a process by which a family member, employer or close friend can get help from experts in mental illness (or problems) without any action by law enforcement until such time as the mental health facility has determined that legal action is required.

From the government’s perspective, “What’s the problem?” One dangerous person and a few guns removed. Ends justify the means.
At the very least this is ripe for abuse. Family feuds should not be cause for stripping somebody of their rights. Cops shouldn’t be showing up during pre-dawn hours. Too easy.
Surprise raids are important lest the suspect flush his guns down the toilet to destroy the evidence.
