I have added an 1/8 of a teaspoon of baking soda to my coffee grounds before it brews. The coffee is less acidic and tastes smoother. Helps my stomach all in one shot. Been doing this for years.

The body and disease still has many mysteries.

I was told by some health professionals and read some health articles claiming that having an acidic body made one more inclined to activate cancer cells and that an alkaline body chemistry retarded or killed cancer producing cells.

For a time I would daily mix baking soda and water to try to get my pH in balance. Of course how one measures pH can be difficult. There are blood tests but that can be expensive. You can use store bought litmus paper and measure saliva or urine. I never found out if either of those are accurate since your saliva can be easily contaminated by what you eat and drink, and I’m told urine is waste so if your body is trying to get rid of acid it will obviously read acidic.

I’ve also heard that while you might think drinking an alkaline solution will chemically balance out acids in your body, that your body may produce more acid in your digestive system to counter the baking soda. So does your body have its own pH balance point and always try to correct back to that?

So it’s all very confusing as to the actual medical value of drinking baking soda solution. If anyone has any insight into the above or good medical advice on this I hope they will post. Bottom line always seems to come back to eating healthy and staying physically active.

Inspector Queen used Tummy Fizz.

Shows I have no life since I can remember useless trivia from Ellery Queen.

1942, that was before any of the miracle drugs for acid stomach and acid reflux came on the market. In the service I would go to sick bay with stomach cramps and they gave a bottle of green liquid (can’t remember what they called it) and it was worthless. Just suffered or got some creme de cocoa and milk.

Probably because baking soda is way less expensive than drugs.

2 cups of strong coffee every morning is the best laxative for me.

The IV contained 0.9% NACL (normal saline) which is the amount of sodium that is in blood. If you go with straight water bad things happen due to osmosis trying to balance things back out in cells.

Will people taking vinegar violently foam at the mouth after drinking the baking powder solution?

I’ve used baking soda and salt to brush my teeth for a year or so. Coincidentally my reflux has gone away and I can drink coffee again. Maybe not so coincidental.

Normal saline is salt water that has the salt at the same amount in the water as salt is in your blood and body fluids. It is not added salt

I have stopped omeprazole and now I am on pantoprazole. Little higher dosage but seems to do the job.

Ok. “Trying” it to gauge an effect is one thing, but doing it regularly without addressing the WHY as to the cause of the imbalance/inflammation is reckless.

Thus baking soda falls right in line with the “pills, powders, elixirs & ‘diets’” I denigrate ad nauseam.

DH’s kidney doctor told him to never take omeprezole (or any other PPI) again. Said it’s very bad for the kidneys.

She substituted the older drug ranitidine. That seems to work well for DH. Until the FDA did a recall on some ranitidine so everyone pulled all of their ranitidine, even that not contaminated.

Will see if he’ll tolerate some bicarb!

That particular scene is in “All About Eve”...
I just watched it about two weeks ago.

Really? I could have sworn it was Monte Woolley who asked for the bicarb.

I was going by memory, and it has been awhile since I saw either movie.

Oh, well.

I just found an online script of All About Eve (1950), and you're absolutely right. I found the line in the script.

Thanks.

Sure. It’s the party scene with Addison Dewitt and especially one of the most famous scenes with a young actress who’s days were numbered... Marylin Monroe ...
I still think All About Eve is the best movie ever. Not for adventure or violence or plot twists, but the dialog is beyond just “writing a movie”...
