If you look at Google Maps, you’ll see that this isn’t “a bad part of town” - the park is right across the street from the college dorms. Basically, the Columbia campus cops and security people dropped the ball.

I'm the biggest coward on earth and I'm no expert on NYC but to me any part of Manhattan that's north of 110th Street is "a bad part of town"...particularly after dark.

My son has a friend in the Yale freshman dorm.

He said the kids literally ORDER weed over SnapChat and go out to the car to get it, like UberEats.

He can't believe that some WASPy bumpkin from Charlottesville went into one of the most dangerous parks in NYC to get weed, when any number of guys in her dorm would have gladly gotten it for her, if only in hopes of getting a date.

[No, but it sends a message, and alerts others like her that it’s dangerous to be roaming the streets and parks of New York at night in pursuit of whatever good time you’re looking for. Kids think their invincible. They always think it won’t happen to them...that this kind of stuff happens to other people. Check out Google Maps sometime. The park is literally across the street from the college dorms. She wasn’t venturing into some random area or downtown Mogadishu. That’s why this incident is so shocking. Based on Yelp reviews, along with some photos, this seems like a pretty nice park:
