I like the trough on a platform idea!

I remember watching a video about a couple who had a homestead in the Cochise County, Arizona desert.

I wish I could find it. They had all their raised beds on platforms not just because of bad soil and aging backs but to keep varmints out.

Last year we had a terrible rabbit infestation and I was super busy at work...no time for building fences.

My last minute solution was to get many wooden crates from the Industrial area of Seattle. The crates, like pallets, get dumped outside the manufacturing businesses, free for the taking.

I set them in rows and lined them with weed blocking fabric.....filled them.with garden soil and planted.

It was not a total success but not because I used crates.

The crates are convenient in that everything was either at thigh or belly button height. Sizes avg 3x4x3.5

Downside of the idea was the amount if aoil it takes to fill the crate. Downside for me was the lack of access I have to my backyard which meant I had to haul 4 yards of soil from my front yard to my backyard in home depot buckets.

Good news for me was I have 2 kids and a wife to help me haul dirt. That was also bad news for them.

This year I built a poultry/chicken wore fence around the garden area. I am removing the soil from the crates and placing it in my newly created 24x4’ flower beds and cutting up the crates into fire pit sized pieces.

As luck would have it my backyard neighbors are replacing the cedar fence and I got a ton of old cedar boards to make raised bed.....at least enough for one 24x4’

My daughter and I got a lot done this week too.

Kind of excited for it all especially after I jumped the gun during a February warm spell and started a bunch of stuff.

It got really cold again and I lost the whole mess except for a few pepper plants.

I’m thrilled to have actual plants in place that might take off.

I don’t normally plant potatoes but not being able to find any at the store was a bit alarming to say the least....

Ha!
Bought 5 gallons of potting soil for my ‘Black Cherokee” tomato plants.

Really intended to grow some cherry tomatoes this year but, well... things happened.

Strawberries at the local farm’s kiosk. Just gotta get up early before they’re gone LOL!

When I moved into this previously abandoned house I had Woodpeckers and Owls. They moved away, but I enjoyed them very much.

I couldn’t remember if just one 12 or two.

I am amazed at what that poster can do with such a small space!

I got the asparagus in.

The previous owner left us with a nice pile of well rotted maure so I got the bed prepared and planted the asparagus. We do need to put the sides up, but at least the asparagus is in the ground.

Today was pretty cool out but for working at something like that, it was the perfect temperature.
