The usual explanation -- that the people doing the work had tried to carve the stone in a way that the supervisor had not told them to -- could also very easily be correct. :^)

Stonehenge was initially a circle of rough, unworked bluestone pillars set in pits known as the Aubrey Holes, near Stonehenge, and that the sarsens (sandstone blocks) were added some 500 years later. If it proves to be so that the holes always had some kind of stone placed in them and no wood at any time, the audio tracks in the hand-helds there will have to be updated!
