Well they’re Homo Sapien Neanderthalis we’re Homo Sapien Sapien. We interbred. So different species ? Probably not ! These boundaries are very poorly understood.

There is a school of thought that Neanderthals may have actually been smarter the Homo Sapiens, but our species may have been healthier, nastier, procreated more, or worked together better.

Or just run faster. Neanderthals had shorter legs. Somebody who is able to run up, toss a spear, and run off would have an advantage.

If there was interbreeding, then they are not a separate species, they are a different race.

I am sure there a a multitude of things that are beyond you and few are ritualistic or symbolic.
