About 15 yrs ago, a relative wrote a doctorate on how the world would be a better place if there were no borders, in fact, no separate countries. It is to me very likely that minus the expansion of the Roman Empire north of Italy, Iberia, Greece and Anatolia, the conditions for the later mass immigration into the empire might not have occurred. However, instead of the empire falling from within by mass immigration, it might have fallen later due to formal war with a Germanic based empire spread out all along the north of it.
The Roman Empire fell because it was no longer a “Roman” empire but had become a multinational empire ruled over from Rome, the center, and then over time the center could not hold.
