I enjoyed her books as a teen in the mid 60s.

Trivia:

In the early 70s I’d shop at a used bookstore in Butler Plaza on 436 in the Winter Park area (central Florida). The owner told me that Andre Norton lived in the area and came into the store on occasion. The owner said she (Norton) valued her privacy and would not say any more. I thought it was interesting that an author I liked was so nearby. It would have been nice to have crossed paths and met her.

Back in the dark ages, a fanzine that I participated in (back when such things were done on paper and sent by mail) did an extensive project to rate SF books. Among books with at least 10 ratings, Lord of the Rings was the highest rated, and Watership Down was second. Not counting those as Science Fiction, the highest rated SF books were: More Than Human, A Canticle for Liebowitz, and The Stars My Destination.

My top rated were Rendezvous with Rama, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Foundation Trilogy, Cities in Flight, Way Station and Little Fuzzy (couldn’t stick to 3).

“I wish 1984 was still fiction…”

God gave us an extra 38 years to stop 1984, and we still did not.

I always thought “Brave New World” was the dystopian future we were head toward. The fact we’re head toward 1984 shows the lack of imagniation and intelligence of the left!

Most of the books by C.J. Cherryh. Also enjoyed some books by Stirling. Never enjoyed books by Asimov.

Thanks! I remember that from school!

Rod Serling did a shorter version of the story on ‘The Twilight Zone,’ too.

I like Cook’s Starfishers trilogy, too, that follows from Passage at Arms.

While I thoroughly enjoyed “Passage at Arms”, I just couldn’t get into “Starfishers” ... one of the few books/series that I actually stopped reading in the middle.

Sometimes it just happens that way. I enjoyed it, but there have been plenty of books I couldn’t get into, and more than a few series I quit on.

Still have the complete set of Lensman and Skylark series. Might have a couple of sequels and EE Doc Smith books.

If I had known Asimov was speaking at my commencement, I might have gone.

"Dreams of My Father", where a Kenyan boy raised in Indonesia is magically born in Hawaii. He goes on to graduate from a prestigious university where no one can remember him while befriending real domestic terrorists. He then rises to a country's highest office and eventual multi-millionaire without ever performing honest work. Similar to "Being There" but without the profound insights of that book's protagonist.

Seriously though, while it's probably best labeled as Fantasy "Elric of Melnibone" by Michael Moorcock is a near-poetic masterpiece yet to be spoiled by bad translation to film. His "Behold the Man" is also excellent. Most of the works by Kurt Vonnegut, Phillip K. Dick, Nivens & Pournelle, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Roger Zelazny, Robert Silverberg...so many others. Some think Michael Crichton was a hack but I always found his stories well written and entertaining. Good reading to you all!
