I no longer OWN debit account. My son was a life-guard & the thief was able to empty his checking account. At least, with a credit card his financial exposure is limited to $50.
AMEN Brother! Like Clint said “Every one has one!” (opinions, that is...)
And one is worth exactly as much as another.
“You shouldn’t be using a Debit Card Online.”
+1000.
It’s a mistake to have a debit card in the first place, in my opinion. If it is your ATM card, you can go to your bank and get a replacement card that is ONLY an ATM card (for cash) You will REALLY have to fight for it. Just plop yourself down in a chair and do not give up until they agree to an “ATM only” card. They DO NOT want ATM only cards, they LOVE debit cards because in the end, you can definitely get dinged for the fraudulent or disputed charge.
The problem with a debit card is, that if there is a disputed charge, even a potential or actual fraud, the charge remains on your account unless and until resolved. If it never gets resolved, that charge belongs to you. A credit card, all you have to do is to call them and dispute the charge. They will send you a form to fill out & sign, no big deal. But the funds get reversed into your account pending resolution, and YOU get the benefit of the doubt, not the vendor or the fraudster. It’s a giant difference even if it doesn’t sound like it.
I don’t practice purchasing on line and if I need to (funerals etc.) I use a credit card.
You shouldn’t be using a Debit Card Online.
You should only use Secure Credit Cards Online.
I don’t understand why anyone would use a Debit Card st anytime!
^^^^^THIS!
I think one of the selling points of getting a Debit Card is that even if your credit history is not great, you can still obtain a Debit Card. I had a few years of hassle with paying off my student loan, and later with Lois Lerner’s IRS for unpaid taxes.
After years of postponing out of habit, I changed, I sort of grew up and I was ready to start over. My credit is good now. No more Artful Dodger games of not paying my bills.
Do you use a credit card to pay your bills? Some companies charge you for using a credit card.
I have a bank account with a debit card that I use only for online purchases and gas pumps. I move the money over as I need it with a 20 dollar buffer. I have another account for, direct deposits, checking and debit that I never use online.
We’ve never used a debit card because people we know have had their bank account hacked as a result of it.
Have never had a problem with Amazon in relation to our credit card on file.
BTW, my sis found out that when returning an item to Amazon you can no longer just drop it off at UPS to pack and send. You must box it up before dropping it at UPS.
I rarely use Amazon.
The goal is to remove current Credit card from profile. To accomplish this first register an old card number. Then, proceed to eliminate access by eliminating current credit card number.
It can be a hassle to make purchases because the cards numbers need to be exchanged. But, it is well worth the peace of mind for me :)
Yes, I pay most of my bills with a credit card. There are a few like car and house payments that you can’t. You can pay your property and income taxes with a card, but as you mentioned they charge a fee.
interesting, here in Texas it just went the other way. It used to be you had to pack it up and put the label on it, now you can just drop it off unwrapped.
Never use a debit card. The legal protections are smaller than for credit cards unless the bank voluntarily extends additional protections. Which can be withdrawn in a boilerplate notice.
Too many attempts to access your email account with invalid password?
This guy in Bangladesh wants the password to your email account so he can log in?
Big red flags, buddy
Cancel that debit card and close that email account!
I didn’t know it was possible to order from Amazon by phone.
A few times we’ve received confirmation emails about things (a couple were laptops) we supposedly ordered, but hadn’t. We called and they referred it to their fraud department. It never appeared on our credit card.
Haven’t had any issues after signing up for the additional extra verification code via text.
We’ve always had excellent customer service when it was necessary.
I have more than two choices. This is a public forum, not a chat room. Now that I told you, you know the difference.
I stopped buying from Amazon after a thief accessed my debit card info via that company, and stole from me!!!!
Amazon did not help me recover my money!! I had to go to my bank to get the help I needed, which I indeed received!!!
Do not buy from Amazon!!!!
“I didn’t know it was possible to order from Amazon by phone.”
True. Just part of what makes me think it was an inside job.
yes.. you have more than two choices. But you attacked me saying I didn’t understand those who choose to use a debt card (which pays them nothing back) instead of a credit card that gives you free money back for nothing.
If you want to make a different choice, I would ask what exactly that choice might be? Cash? that would be the same as a debt card. Paypal? Check? direct debit from a bank account? again, all of those are the same as a debt card basically.
Only a credit card pays YOU to use it. Assuming you are responsible enough not to spend more than you can pay off at the end of the month.
TNoldman is correct. Debit cards have insufficient protections regarding fund reclamations. Credit cards pretty much give card holders carte blanch to reverse erroneous charges and their fraud controls are always more fierce.
Also, your bank is garbage (can’t access your transactions?!). Move your accounts to a small local owned bank or credit union where they are hungry for customers and have real customer service. A bank that has issues with double charges not being dropped off properly and can’t view or find them has crap software and lousy IT support.
Get an Amazon credit card <or a reloadable gift card if she has spending issues) and pay it off in full every month. One that lets your view your statements in real time so you can spot issues right away.
