True enough. Some other factors may come into play.
Many of us still love football. I’m sad this is the last week of regular season for college football. Looking forward to the Army/Navy game. GO ARMY! (My Dad served in the Army.)
And I do NOT want to see football become flag or touch football. Hitting and getting hit are part of the game! (See some of my comments above.)
That said, some reasonable rules such as the anti-targeting one make sense. Still lots of hard hits etc. It’s not Nerf football.
OK, admit some leftist do want to make it Nerf football. To them I say two things: (1) Did you play? (2) GO TO H###.
PS When hiring people, one thing I consider is did they play a team sport at any level. It matters.
I raised 4 sons, and I always understood that rough-housing is important in a boy’s development. Encouraged them to climb trees, skateboard, and play any sports that interested them — soccer, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, but I drew the line at football when they were young.
My eldest boy wanted to play, but I made him wait until high school. Of course, at that point, he was nowhere near the level of the boys who had been playing since 1st grade, so he was a bench warmer in 9th grade, and then he was over it. All part of my plan....
I did walk to the wrong sideline. Had no idea where I was. No flag though. Grr. Did get the first down. /Smile again
That was 30+ years ago and think I can still feel that hit. LOL
BTW, something a lot of people don't know: Soccer has almost as many concussions as football. Also, cheerleading is by far the most dangerous sport for women.
Thanks...I knew it was an injury sustained a lot during football.
Thanks, but holy cow...
“Researchers Find CTE in 345 of 376 Former NFL Players Studied”. That’s bad.
My father played for Clemson before going off to war. I wanted to try out in high school but he talked me out of it. I did wrestling instead. I was never great, but to this day...I hate a sweaty armpit.
Yeah. When CTE in NFL players began to be widely discussed, twenty years ago, the story was about how guys who played in the leather helmet days, like Sammy Baugh, were still whip smart in their 80s, while guys who had been retired for just a decade were a neurological messes.
FJB never played football...
CTE is a historical fact. But the WAPO has chosen Heisman weekend to compile yet another attack on football, couched hypocritically as a concern for the lives of players.
Never said you said it.
Go Ar...er go Navy.
There. Fixed it.
It’s probably a good story, but I don’t click on WaPo articles.
My dadday used to say to me as a kid... “If you insist on hitting yourself in the head with a hammer, dont come complaining to me when you get a headache...” comes to mind...
Daddy**
In the end he was stage 4 CTE. I doubt the last few years of his life were very fun.....
TWO DECADES AGO, a Florida resident went to give a speech, something he had done dozens of times, and just froze. “I don’t know what’s wrong,” Howard Cassady told his wife.
A couple., who attend our church lost their middle age son to ALS this after a terrible battle with ALS.
