Hexagons are axtually very common in nature

“Columns of basalts from an old volcanic eruption. A snowflake. Beehives. Corals, crystals, and a lot of other structures, both biological and non-biological, feature hexagons. Why does nature, which often seems so messy and irregular, seem to prefer this shape? Well, as it turns out, itโ€™s all about geometry and physics”

What a disappointment, irregular polygons. Giant diamonds would be so much better.

There was an earlier high tech civilization on Earth that got wiped out by a series of naturally occurring large impacts hundreds of millions of years ago. Prior to the cataclysm, the Moon began as a sort of landfill for trash, rubbish, waste, and "recycling" that the lost civilization had to get rid of. It started out in various smaller piles, which became a hazard to space travel, so a cleanup effort began which gathered the small piles into a single large one, which got larger and larger, then had to be moved away from the Earth's surface. Slowly but surely it got to the size we see today. ;^)

But the whole "lost civilization on Mars" thing, now that's actual rubbish.

You can see polygons in just about any “mud flat” or “Salt flat.” It is a naturally occurring shape when water evaporates.

All rocks and other geological formations form geometric shapes.

The solution to the social problem in the long run would be to increase the colony’s size to a level that can support reasonable long term social dynamics. Some differentiation in housing preferences should also be allowed. The colony would need to be big enough that people wouldn’t feel like rats trapped a cage.

There is no perfect answer because people are inherently messy. That said, we have plenty of experience with small societies. At some point, it becomes a matter of picking one’s own poison.

The Chinese colonization model will be all men. Then they will send up another team to try and determine why the colony died out.

Yup. Nature does some amazing things. No reason it did not work that way on Mars.

Hexagons are the Bestagons.

Just the way it is.
