To reiterate: "Many people do not care for surströmming" I do not care for herring or pickled herring and I can affirm that based on this description I would NOT even try Surstromming. (There are youtubes of people who have!) Before about 1700 were really hard years in Scandinavia where as much as 30% of the people died of starvation. Potential starvation might encourage people to eat what is essentially rotted fish.

Lutefisk; I do like fresh or frozen cod with butter salt pepper and parsley, but dried cod not as much. There were several years when I was about 10 or 11 Father prepared Lutefisk for Christmas dinner, usually with potatoes, potato sausage, and white sauce and then we would go to Church (Lutheran of course.) I read at least one article by a cook who was given some by a Swede and he said that it had a delicate delicious taste. It apparently took 5 days to prepare it properly. It took my father this long as well, but his grandmother Anna had passed and there may have been some missing steps.

Way back in the 60’70’s, my old nuke days, I hammered pretty hard and regular on all the workers around to make sure they were aware of the long term possible effects.

I remember a few times when workers had procedures involving radiation. The medical guys are dumbasses when it comes to knowing what the actual exposure might be so we couldn’t convert that to equivalrent industrial exposure. The upshot would be that we had to restrict that worker from job site work——didn’t fire them-—just kept them in the office.

For people having high level medical exposure early on they have to be warned to minimize it from there on out because it never goes away, just accumulates. Dental x-rays, microwave ovens, 5G phones, all kinds of stuff out there that can contribute to later health issues. 600 REMS and you’re dead.

It’s important for anyone having early high dose radiation treatments to forever monitor their white blood cell count. Changes indicate problems and treatment for that is indicated. It is the first marker for radiation damage.

And Cobalt 60 is still around. It keeps its kick for something over 35,000 years.
