The GOP was born in 1854 when a group of religious folk broke away from the Whigs; they were fed up with their refusal to take sides on the slavery question.

Eleven years later slavery was gone. Since they were a minority in the country they ought never to have been able to win the presidency or effect the change they set about to make but it happened.

We should never defend Democrat history. Let Democrats answer for their legacy.

I wholeheartedly agree with your above statement! But, do you see my point? There were still slaveholders in Union states through the end of the War Between The States. I just really butchered how I posed the question to GOPyouth.

Another question.....how is it that the history of the democrat party is never discussed publicly so they will be held accountable for all of it?

I have a life thank you, and it's pretty apparent that mine is a whole lot more centered than yours. You have this constant itch in a place you can't scratch and it is driving you insane.

I can see it in your posts, and several others have commented on it as well - right here in this thread. The whole of your point in this thread was easily dispelled as an exaggeration on your part more than any on Beck's, and only serves as a launching pad for your anti-American spew.

Do you have little voices that urge you on? Do they tell you to do things?

They tell me not to respond to idiots, but I just can't seem to listen.

From the "Cornerstone Speech" delivered in Savannah, GA on March 21, 1861 (the whole quote and more of the speech):

But not to be tedious in enumerating the numerous changes for the better, allow me to allude to one other though last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the "rock upon which the old Union would split." He was right. What was conjecture with him, is now a realized fact. But whether he fully comprehended the great truth upon which that rock stood and stands, may be doubted. The prevailing ideas entertained by him and most of the leading statesmen at the time of the formation of the old constitution, were that the enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature; that it was wrong in principle, socially, morally, and politically. It was an evil they knew not well how to deal with, but the general opinion of the men of that day was that, somehow or other in the order of Providence, the institution would be evanescent and pass away. This idea, though not incorporated in the constitution, was the prevailing idea at that time. The constitution, it is true, secured every essential guarantee to the institution while it should last, and hence no argument can be justly urged against the constitutional guarantees thus secured, because of the common sentiment of the day. Those ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. It was a sandy foundation, and the government built upon it fell when the "storm came and the wind blew."

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science. It has been so even amongst us. Many who hear me, perhaps, can recollect well, that this truth was not generally admitted, even within their day. The errors of the past generation still clung to many as late as twenty years ago. Those at the North, who still cling to these errors, with a zeal above knowledge, we justly denominate fanatics. All fanaticism springs from an aberration of the mind from a defect in reasoning. It is a species of insanity. One of the most striking characteristics of insanity, in many instances, is forming correct conclusions from fancied or erroneous premises; so with the anti-slavery fanatics. Their conclusions are right if their premises were. They assume that the negro is equal, and hence conclude that he is entitled to equal privileges and rights with the white man. If their premises were correct, their conclusions would be logical and just but their premise being wrong, their whole argument fails. I recollect once of having heard a gentleman from one of the northern States, of great power and ability, announce in the House of Representatives, with imposing effect, that we of the South would be compelled, ultimately, to yield upon this subject of slavery, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics, as it was in physics or mechanics. That the principle would ultimately prevail. That we, in maintaining slavery as it exists with us, were warring against a principle, a principle founded in nature, the principle of the equality of men. The reply I made to him was, that upon his own grounds, we should, ultimately, succeed, and that he and his associates, in this crusade against our institutions, would ultimately fail. The truth announced, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics as it was in physics and mechanics, I admitted; but told him that it was he, and those acting with him, who were warring against a principle. They were attempting to make things equal which the Creator had made unequal.

Charleston debate on September 18, Lincoln stated: "I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people." As long as blacks lived in America with whites: "while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

Lincoln did not condone slavery however, he did not believe in equality of the races.

Neither did anyone else at the time.

One of the things we have to do is reclaim GOP history. Whatever you feel about the abolitionists, the GOP was born as the abolition party, when a group of Christians broke from the Whigs for the express purpose of ending slavery. Considering that they were a minority in a country that either favored slavery or didn’t care one way or another, its amazing how it all played out. Whigs evaporated as if they never were, and in a very few years slavery too.

The Dems were the defenders of the slave economy, Jim Crow race repression, Klansmen (who were the armed wing of the Democrat Party), lynch mobs, fire hoses, church bombings and on down the line. Wilson brought Jim Crow into federal law. FDR refused to outlaw lynching. They are still a party obsessed by race and ethnic politics. The GOP then, like now, was never perfect but by and large they have been on the right side of history which is why the Dems are determined to rewrite it.

We need to stop letting them.

I read a pretty good book recently about Jim Crow in America; a lot of it will curl your hair. The funny thing, the writer is clearly a Democrat and you’ll hunt high and low to find any admission that it was the Dems doing it or the Repubs opposing it. But the facts as sanitized as they are, are hair-raising. Thats their history. They love to claim that somehow along the line Repubs and Dems switched sides on race; if that was my history I’d try to re-write it too.

Lincoln wasn’t perfect? No one is perfect. Some see farther sooner than others is all. No one ever sees the whole picture. But everyone knew where he stood on slavery which is why the moment he was elected the earth started moving under everyone’s feet.

This all started with Beck’s program on the black founding fathers. Its a good show about people who have been erased from history. I give him points for trying. Last night he brought us Joe McCarthy and tonight the black preachers and soldiers and politicians who helped birth the US in the late seventeen hundreds. Pretty good.

I don’t think I hung my hat on anything. I think I clearly explained the “why’s” and “wherefore’s,” and gave the Confederacy no “outs” on the moral evil of slavery. I simply gave it some context in both it’s cutural and CSA Constitutional setting. That doesn’t JUSTIFY anything — merely explains it within it’s setting.

It was a pretty good program, it was mostly about the black founding fathers and that has all got lost in this thread.

That is quite likely the reason for posting this thread. It doesn't appear to have any other genuine purpose.

Southern states weren't the only states denying blacks their constitutional rights within the borders of the United States.

I never said they were the only ones. And I hope you're not suggesting that 'everyone was doing it' is some kind of moral defense. The Southern states were stupid enough to put powder to the defense of the indefensible and they deserved all that they got and then some.

Apparently some people think 'The South' is a noble cause worth defending. I equate the lot of those proponents with barnyard animals, except that the animals are more intelligent and noble. Look around this thread and see the modern face of the slaveholder and the armchair rebel. What children! They are not men, they are not worthy of anything but scorn and derision. Cowards and reprobates relive battles their weakling ancestors couldn't justify or win in the moment.

This nonsense about 'states rights' is nothing but a fig leaf for white supremacy.

Bigots need to be called out and stamped out wherever they rear their heads. Let them wipe sarcastic tears from their eyes as they reveal themselves to be nothing but racist trolls.

I say this is a fact: if Sherman had been allowed to finish his work we wouldn't today have to endure the grotesque suggestions found elsewhere on this thread-- because such ideas would be rightfully and unequivocally extinct. Would that that were the case the world would be a better place.
