We were kind of under the impression that major military operations usually took place at night. Do we have any experts here who can give us some idea of how common it is for these things to occur in broad daylight?

I'm no expert, but even I know that surprise operations usually start just before dawn, when people on guard are most tired and have the hardest time paying attention.

It would seem that these operations would take place under the cover of night instead of the broad daylight where they could be shot down...

Yeah, because multi-day operations are always done in the cover of total darkness...

I am not military

No s***, Sherlock.

It energizes the anti-Bush folks here.

Much like a duck-and-run "censure" reolution by Fiengold does. If the anti-Bush folks get any more "energized", some of them might get off the couch long enough to dust off the crumbs.

Why? Iraqi soldiers outnumbered ours if I remember what they said last night.

You should have heard BBC World News this morning - our local public radio carries them. (Yeah, I know, serves me right for listening.) They were interviewing some US colonel, and after every question he answered, they basically called him a shill for the propaganda machine.

Why does the lib media even bother getting real people to interview? Why don't they just computer-generate some voice that will say exactly what they want - it would cut down on their costs.

Good analysis of DUmmy analysis...Hence the term "Stuck on Stupid" defiantly applies to them.

Neither of us knows anything about military tactics, or typical procedures for the US military. We were hoping there might be some veterans here or other military experts who could tell us if this is typical.

You know, Skinner and company, if you at the DU had not tombstoned Sad Little Pony, your own Iraqi war veteran, for the horrid sin of not saying the war was a disaster, you might have someone who could give you some insight on military tactics. However, the purity of the knowledge that the troops are all dishearten, the Iraqi civilians hate us, and we are being badly beaten must never be interrupted by facts.

I say again, thank you Sad Little Pony for your service and you are welcome here on the Free Republic any time you may wish to join us.

"P.J., I know the article you cited said pre-dawn and these idiots are wondering why it is taking place during the day but if Iraq is anything like Bahrain, daylight begins very early. My son was a toddler then and always woke me up about 5 am because it was daylight and very bright. It stayed daylight until about 9-10pm."

What I was trying to say (very poorly), there is more daylight over there or at least seemed like it to me. You can't get a major operation done in a short time, anyhow. Next time I need to wake up before I post.

My stupid dog kept waking me up last night. Anybody want a weird looking jack russell/blue tick hound mix? ;)

I'm just sitting here imagining exactly what the DUmmies would be saying IF this assault had been done "under the cover of night".......shouldn't delve too deeply into the mind of the paranoid.

Enlistments are not sagging for the active duty forces.

That is true. The "gitsum gitsum" factor is running higher than ever. If my wife hadn't expressly forbid such a consideration, I might be tempted to be one of these late-life recruits.

I mean, think about it. Everyone has different motivations for joining the military - but if your motivation is to "make a difference", it's easier to see a direct path to making a difference when times are "interesting", rather than when times are sleepy. Reserves recruitment suffers because a small (but not insignificant) percentage of those potential recruits are used to seeing it as "safe" duty, where they get to play soldier on the weekends, make a buck, and generally stay out of harm's way. (This is in NO way intended to besmirch the majority who DO serve in the Reserves with the noblest of intentions - but simply to acknowledge that a broader spectrum of people consider the Reserves than consider full-time service.)

Psst! Las Vegas has an EXCELLENT outdoor flea market. A friend of mine lived there several years and made a living from just stuff he sold at that flea market.

"I might be tempted to be one of these late-life recruits."

My husband retired right before the war started. Sometimes he really wants to return. Sometimes I even want to return. I spent 7 years in the Navy.

I imagine the vets at DU are the ones holding a lifelong grudge against the military for getting less tham honorable discharges for several field grade Article 15's due to multiple UA's coming up hot for crack

But some giant operation like this still doesn't look good almost 3 years after the war started.

This operation involved about 1500 troops of both the US and Iraqi armed forces. Not exactly a "giant operation" by any standard.
