Dan Yoder is a serial entrepreneur and the VP of Engineering at Border Stylo, a Hollywood-based social media startup. He can be reached on Twitter as @dyoder.

Disclosure by Dan Yoder: I'm the VP of Engineering for a Hollywood-based social media startup, BorderStylo. The opinions expressed here are purely my own and are not in any way endorsed by my employer. While I do not see our applications as directly competitive to Facebook, nor have I presented them as such, it would be disingenuous not to mention this.

Thanks to David Harthcock for creating the great "Ban Facebook" graphic.

Privacy is pure gold. Some people never learned that lesson

Eh. Most of these complaints really revolve around people who put too much data on their Facebook. they can’t give away information they don’t have. Use AdBlockPlus and the ads go away. And since they aren’t charging nobody really should be surprised they claim ownership of the data. My biggest complaint with the site is they keep changing the UI for no good reason and most of the changes blow.

The guy needs a new name for his site. BorderStylo sounds like a mall clothing store.

Facebook is as private as you want it to be. If you worry about privacy, do not put anything you wouldn’t want to make public there.

Facebook makes it incredibly difficult to truly delete your account

South Park made great fun of that, and of facebook, in one of their new shows a couple of weeks ago. Stan was sucked into his computer, tron-like, when he tried to delete his facebook account.

I am a youth minister during my off hours from work. I use facebook to keep up to date on whats going on in my kids lives. It has been absolutely helpful in that regard. Like all of you I do not put a lot of personal information out there. Just name and rank and thats about it.

Reason 11. Someone could go into your account and embarrass you in front of hundreds of associates. I know a guy, and a “friend” got in his account and wrote “I just sharted”

I bet he wishes he never reconnected with those old friends after that!

Same here. Never signed up because I couldn’t see any value in it over having a web page (which I don’t have either). Too old skool, I guess.

Another reason is that FB is just an enormous waste of time. Not to mention being incredibly narcissistic, egotistical and trivial.

I only need one reason: to get away from Farmville and Mafia Wars spam. Maybe if I could combine the two games and hire a hitman to take out somebody’s chickens...

Ditto. While Facebook has its uses, mostly it's just a gossipy waste of time. Mostly Harmless, but a timewaster nonetheless. Sort of like FR. :-)

A quick story.... a Coworker "friended" a number of people here at work, including her boss. One fine day, she listed her status - while at work - as "sleeping". Apparently, she'd had a big night out, the night before.

Her boss wandered over to her cube to check. Indeed, her status was "Sleeping".

She's now a former coworker. Stupid people and technology shouldn't mix. :-)

They could do that via e-mail as well.

Most of these reasons are rather lame.

Just be careful what you put on there and have proper privacy settings. It isn’t rocket science, regardless of this guy’s statement that it is.

Thanks for this, I’m considering deleting my account too. I constantly tell friends they have too many personal details on facebook.
