Correct. It’s what FB users PLACE on their FB page that gets them in trouble, and these are the same incompetent users who dont have a sense of individual privacy leaving everything to the whims of FB.
Do you need a hand taking down some Russian muscle?
I bowed to the peer pressure of an attractive woman (my wife) and signed up for a facebook account. I don’t post much, but the wife does.
Honestly, my wife and I pretty much assume that anything on facebook is public. We don’t aire marital grievances (or ANY grievances), and we don’t post information that we wouldn’t want publicized. So — facebook is privy to the fact that I have a couple of kids, my birthdate, the city I live in, my marital status, and my religion. With a little scouring of friends and “fan” pages ... you can find out that I watch 24, House and The Big Bang Theory; listen to Toby Kieth, Chris Daughtry and the Dropkick Murphys; enjoy the Taste of Texas Steakhouse and Jim Pruetts Guns & Ammo.
Nothing you couldn’t find out with any reasonably competent public records research ... and nothing I wouldn’t tell someone if they asked outright. Private information is private. Public or inconsequential information is open.

Whatever.
I live a thousand miles from our friends and families, I post pictures of my daughter on Facebook for her grandparents, aunts and uncles to see how she’s growing. I keep track of what they’re up to in ways I couldn’t before. And I’m savvy enough to know how to check my privacy settings.
The answer is consumer education, not a boycott of a tool.
I hate Facebook, but rather than delete I think I’ll just fictionalize everything and keep an account so I can still see what other people are doing.
I did too! What she didn't count on was that I'd do it under a false name. She still gives me a hard time about it. :-)
That’s another example of user error. First your guy had a password so obvious any random friend could guess it, then he didn’t know you can remove anything from your wall. 100% preventable and correctable.
And then there are cases where someone sets up a Facebook page in your name. My father got hit with that, and he goes nowhere near Facebook. He got the account deleted, using some rather big legal threats.
My settings are all mostly private anyway - and the only thing I put there that *could* be damaging are my political views...only visible to friends (and friends of friends I post to...).
No phone number, address, SSN, etc...
I have set up fake accounts so I could read a couple of pages (have I sinned?), but would never create a real account with any authentic information (take that FB legal team!).
Your TV tastes are remarkably similar to mine...
you know that you can block that farmville and mafia wars and other spam by scrolling your mouse to the top right corner of any offending post from that game and a little “Hide” button will appear. You can then choose to hide the app, the user or cancel...
keep 4 later
I play some of the silly games with the kids, but honestly I don't have the time to waste.
I sat through a transition class not long ago, and one of the things the facilitator said was that employers will look up prospective employees on facebook, and try to get an idea about the persons social life. Would you want to hire a person that post " Drunk again this evening" or "screwing off at work" etc..
Yeah!
(see #3)
I deleted, and I’m still getting daily emails from individuals requesting to add them to my fb!
???
if my account is deleted, how are these people finding me?!!!
Attempted to login...I cannot any longer login...
they got our #.......................

I’ve never gotten suckered into this, so I don’t need to worry about how to extract myself from it. If I ever want a “social” presence on the internet, I’ll buy a domain name and set up my own website. I can password protect any or all of it and give the password to my friends and family.
Yes, and they try to collect as much email data on you and your contacts as possible (including linking in other email accounts to your account if you use it to migrate in other contacts).
And facebook takes 20 clicks to get anywhere. Oh, but it's "so" much better than myspace was because it has farmville and isn't owned by Newscorp. That is the liberal mindset at work.
I guess you missed the incident where Facebook mistakenly misdirected thousands of private messages sent through its system, to people who were complete strangers to the senders.
