If this represents the “quality” of his analyses and thought processes, then I will certainly have to ignore anything that he states in his travel programs. There must be at least some travel writers who are capable of analysis at a level more sophisticated than the child-like thinking exhibited by this credulous fool...

Take out self defense, police shootings, suicides, and cross border shootings and this drops to almost nothing but accidental shootings.

This is a worthless statistic.

I think the point of the article is to tell people who might want to travel and see Europe but are afraid to because of the latest "Travel Advisory" that s*** happens everywhere, very much including at home. People who allow themselves to be spooked by some sand rats' chatter about Europe should vacate America based on what's happening all around us. Frankly, their departure would be an improvement for the rest of us.

Besides deaths from gunshot (and I have no way of knowing whether 500 a week or 26,000 in a year are accurate numbers, I suspect they're not but it's possible) he mentions car deaths. His point is that people should not alter their plans because of threats and fears. And he has a commercial interest, his tour company, in pushing that line.

It can't be denied that America is a relatively violent place and we have been so ever since the country's founding. It's a part of our image that keeps our foreign friends and adversaries a bit on edge, and that's where I like them to be. Nick's warning to Major Strasser that there are parts of New York he would recommend Nazi invaders avoid is a part of our "mystique". I have no problem admitting that, nor in believing that it's guns in the hands of honest American citizens that holds the tide back and keeps it from becoming far worse.

>An average of 500 Americans were killed every week in the last year.

I have several questions about the data here:
1 - Were they all Americans that were counted, or were our “undocumented guest workers” [invaders] counted as well?
2 - Are the home-defense stories universally counted?
3 - Of those who fired the gun; how many were:
—a) Generally law-abiding American Citizens?
—b) Police, LEO, or military exercising *legitimate* force?
—c) Police, LEO, or military exercising illegitimate force (like warrant-less searches/raids)?
—d) Foreign nationals?
—e) Other criminals in execution of a crime?
