I’ve heard it attributed to Dorothy Parker, but it was old age and treachery.

” but it was old age and treachery. “
Yeah - there are a number of variants that I’ve heard floating around... (Which is a further indicator that it’s been around for a while... ;))

in a study of ships torpedoed in the North Atlantic during WWII, it was found that older sailors had a higher survival rate than younger sailors. The young ones gave up more easily.Religion played a part as well. My dad worked at the Seaman's YMCA during WWII and said the guys who survived said that besides the kids, Muslims and Hindus gave up the ghost pretty quick - a "Will of Allah" or "Karma" thingy. Atheists found Jesus real quick, while the others took strength from prayer.
Nobody ate anybody else, but a couple of the guys said raw fish (pre-sushi days) were good but raw birds made them sick. In raw fish, they meant EVERYTHING.

I just spent an hour going through a book of Mark Twain quotes but I couldn’t find the “Age and guile——” one.
I had plenty of laughs though.
Example: “Names are not what they seem. The common Welsh name Bzjxxlwep is pronounced Jackson”. (from Following the Equator.)
Having visited Wales I found this hysterical.

Basically this is “God wants you to do what you can do, God will do what only He can do.”
He wants us to be invested in our own skins, too.

Lourdes: I know a lot of people have lost their faith, but mine is stronger than ever.
Karen: Good for you. Next time you get on your knees could you see if the Big Guy can get us a operational B-2 Bomber loaded with nukes?
Lourdes: I don't pray for God to give me things. I don't think it works like that.
Karen: Then what do you pray for?
Lourdes: I ask God to show me what I can do for him.
