You're right about Esquire being weird. Here's another source with Donald Trump's own words quoted.
Trump: I always felt that I was in the military at military schoolYahoo News, NY Times Dylan Stableford
Senior editor
September 8, 2015
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump reportedly told the author of a forthcoming biography that while he never served in the military, he always felt that he had because he attended a military-themed prep school that gave him more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military.

If you missed it, here is a “Vet” that you will love. He is a total POC that lied to the UNITED NATIONS that Iraq not only had WMD but they had “ mobile Labs”. A total lie. The trucks were for weather balloons!! We had 4000 dead and 38,000 wounded!! And 2 damned trillion dollars of printed money after this fool!! Big Military!! Collin Bowell. To hell with that!! Go Trump!!

I was 4 years in a military high school (66-69)
and 6 years in the national guard (71-77).
High school was far more strict and difficult than basic training (Fort Polk-1971),
and AIT (91A10-Ft. Sam Houston-1971) was like a vacation,
and the national guard was like a joke.

Better than demonrats who claim that military service is the same as being gang members, murders or criminals

I went to an exclusive blue blood prep school as a 16 year old post grad to get my grades up and play football at an Ivy League school. Ever since I always felt like a rich kid though the Ivy League school thing gave way to the Army school of infantry.

What do you know about the military academy he attended? I'll answer it since I doubt you'll get it from the OP.
Trump was in charge of maintaining the Academy's armory of M1 Garand rifles. That's what I heard or read.

Non-Vet Donald Trump Insists Military School Is the Same As Military Service Saw nothing in this short article where Trump said military school is the same as serving in the military.

Hit piece by a magazine written for girly men. Not only that, but they argued themselves out of their original criticism.

Trump may be allowed to speak on the deck of a battleship, but is he allowed to say anything about the military?

I wonder if any of the students at HairTard Military Academy were ever “captured” in study hall. He only likes people that weren’t “captured”.

He only said it felt like being in the military—not like it was. Bad hit piece they never used when Clinton or Obama ran for office.
To: basil
No, Mr. Trumpgoing to Military School is NOT the same as being in the service.Trump didn't say it was. He said it was LIKE being in the service.
Boy Scout Camp was like being in the service as well.
That doesn't mean it was the same.

Considering what a joke Navy boot camp was in 1979, I’m absolutely sure he is correct—and his military school lasted a lot longer.
