I wish that we could afford a small cabin *somewhere* remote

I sometimes wish I had a Cave dwelling with a hidden entrance that I could retreat from all the worldly angst and not have any responsibility except to eat, sleep, and read a good book. LOL

The last set of renters really damaged the place. They were so far behind in the rent, that I called the lawyer to evict them. He also had rental properties, and told me that by the time we went through the legal hoops and got the order, they would likely tear the place apart, because the notice of hearing would make them mad, and court dockets were so backlogged.

He said everyone leaves eventually. So when a major repair was needed, I told them since they hadn’t paid the rent for 4 months, I didn’t have the money. I said you’d probably be happier elsewhere. They moved, but had an antique shop and left all the excess inventory there.

I wanted to move it out on the lawn, and leave it. Suggested that I sell it for back rent. Nothing was really legal and would have given them cause for countersuit. Lawyer wrote letter and sent it by certified mail, giving notice of disposition, if not moved out by a certain date.

They refused delivery. So I took the letter, and waited around until they showed up at the house to get something, handed them the letter, and told him to get out, because at exactly that time the next afternoon, we would be changing the locks and he would not have access to his stuff.

The stuff was all gone when we returned and changed the locks. It was not suitable for renting again, and I did not want to go in debt to pay for refurbishing. Good enough for a week or weekend vacation a few times a year.

Now it’s past time to sell. However the property is one of the few undeveloped spots, has room for 5 lots, and is likely to be rezoned retail, so the land potential could at some point be worth more than the house.

I have had a number of inquiries, and they intend to tear down the house anyway and build 5 bungalows. One was thinking apartments. Anyway, I have no idea what it’s worth, but don’t want to ask for an appraisal till the work is done.

Although, I am thinking I might just call a commercial appraisal agent or two and just ask what the land without the house would be worth. Then tack on a bit for the house, and sell as is.

Problem with that is, according to my understanding, no sale is allowed until brought to code and put on city sewer. Has a septic system that was grandfathered in. Can’t be repaired, but doesn’t have to be, as long as it can be pumped out. Twenty thousand was the quote 20 years ago, and hook up was uphill, pump predict to wear out every 5 years, so the journeyman plumber advised against it.

No telling what it would cost now. It’s a pickle, but it’s also darn good shelter if TEOTWAWKI hits. Has a great fireplace, and walk out basement. Carnahan fence all around the house on about 1 acre. Total of about 1.7 acres. Trees in yard to cut.

I know what you mean about being physically fit...just had to go water and fertilize the garden, put more peat moss on the potatoes, and then clean up the front porch and take care of the flowers there....I'm dead now...lol

I've been following these prepper threads for some time now...

my BIG problem....I bought too much...really....just too many cans that are now expiring....I know they can go well past their exp date but still, there is a limit...

so for several months now, we've been finding ways to use all the veggies/tuna/chicken/salmon/tomatoe sauce etc....if we are particularly inventive, its a good day when we can say..."hey, I used 6 cans today"....lol

so word to the wise.....think ahead, buy enough to cover for a few months or a year or two, but no more unless you can rotate and use efficiently, something we apparently have not been doing...

That is so true about the expire date. Things like canned milk go quick. Peanut Butter not so bad. What I did, when the oil spiked up was I started buying all our usual food staples up on sale or at the generic price, because I knew food inflation would hit.

If something had an expire date of 18 months, I bought enough for 18 months and so forth. I have two use now shelves, and as stuff is used the replacements go on the bottom shelves. So forth. So expired stuff hasn’t been to much of problem.

Grand daughter got off her peanut butter kick, so we used it a little slower. Some of the canned veggies like corn have more carbs than I am now allowed, so we have a few more of those than we need. Most stuff has worked out.

Since I’m low carb, I don’t use flour for baking like I used to. But I have several cases from LDS that are good for 20 years. So I probably have enough for our use for the rest of our lives. Still better than the store. Store was regularly having bugs squirming around, and I got tired of taking it back or throwing it out.

does anybody have an opinion on the soy and almond milk they sell in cartons, not refrigerated?.....I am supposing they are irradiated.....but would that be a good prepping item?....

as for canned milk, I bought to much evaporated milk...they are well past their exp date...but I used them in either soups or baking and no one's gotten sick yet..

I did once try one of the shelf stable cartons. Didn’t like the taste, plus I have been reducing my exposure to items containing ingredients that are hard to pronounce, and likely detrimental.

Some of the websites had pint size containers of powdered milk, so I ordered several different ones, so that I could try the powdered milk for taste. Picked one that tasted best. I can drink it fine with water and an ice cube added.

Ordered a bunch of #10 cans - good for 20 years IIRC. I also keep some of that Nido from Walmart (powdered), that I use for baking, and the occasional glass, when I don’t want to go to the store for just milk.

Made a note of these books. As long as you live 25 miles away from the epicenter, there are things to do that can increase your chances of survival from a nuclear event.

We had a history teacher in the 8th grade that taught civil defense classes, so he spent a couple of days teaching about the issue. Can’t remember much of what he said. He demonstrated the use of a Geiger counter, and that with proper technique, a banana could be peeled and eaten safely even if exposed to radiation.

Hubby taught a civil defense class when we were first married back in the 60s. I did read a lot of the stuff then. Forgotten quite a bit. Did do some on-line reading recently and read the SAS survival handbook. Dug out some plans for turning a basement corner into fall out shelter.

We actually had planned to put one in the basement corner, but didn’t have the money to do it when building. Figured to do it later. Priorities changed. I’m putting the books on my wish list. Hope to get some more reading done later this summer. Have some radiation patches, iodide tablets, and a few other things. Doubtful that they are needed where we live though.

Thanks for posting the books.

Thanks for your kind words, greeneyes! It is true that nuclear events are far more survivable than people sometimes think.

Here is a freebie copy which can be downloaded of the Kearney book:

http://www.oism.org/nwss/

And another:
http://www.ki4u.com/free_book/s73p904.htm

But if it is possible, a hard copy is desirable!

I understand about changing priorities! That’s cool that both of you have a good background in this stuff and just need to review it.

The Skousen book is a listing of factoids about a state with respect to its desirability as a place to relocate if one is seeking to leave a city or part of the country that may be more risky than others. It has fascinating info.

I understand people who like places with mild winters but I prefer a place with harsher winters. I know how to keep warm and the weather keeps the rif-raf down.

Thanks for those links. I’m bookmarking for when I have some extra ink and paper. Can’t buy anything else this month till payday. Already had too many extra expense this month. In fact too much for the next several.

When it rains it pours.

Later this year, I’ll be real interested in reading about the various states, and seeing how ours stacks up.

Thanks again.

I know this has been discussed, but I need to buy a water purifier that will let me drink river water even if polluted with the dead.

Is there anything new? Would anyone be good enough to post a recommendation?
