That was the reason for the adoption of the 9mm Parabellum round in the first place, based on my observations while I was working for DOD during the JSSAP program. I've been reliably informed by a family member in a position to know that it's a similar motivation for the FBI switch back to the 9P. At least they'll get to use hollowpoint ammo.
You should really have treated yourself to a SIG 210, the SIG 210-4 having been the choice of the West German Bundesgrenzeschutze when I was stationed on the then-West German 5-KM Zone opposing the Soviet Iron Curtain. The single-action 210-4 was the handgun with which I earned my German Schützenschnur shooting award, a decorative silver rope worn over the right shoulder.
We did not expect to stop any oncoming Soviet onslaught with handgun fire, but handguns were indeed among the many novelties we had in the toybox.
I always wanted one but just too expensive. Actually many years ago, they were not quite as bad as in the last 40 years or so.
I did have a French model 35, an early one which resembles the Sig a bit. It was really a nice gun tho I had to order ammo from a guy who made it by turning revolver cases down so the rim fit.
