Good story...Hunted black bears in Tennessee and Canada for years using Plott Hounds...Never came close to anything like this... Lucky, I guess....

There are some states that allow you to train your dogs out of season...North Carolina is one...I don’t know about New mexico...

YIKES!
Real world, for we who've never been there / done that, any situation that requires the use of a handgun to get out of it is a bad situation...
Obviously someone was looking out for this guy and one would hope for a full recovery for him - he's going to miss this hunting season, though.
It's interesting to note that more and more people in bear country seem to be going to the 10mm rather than big revolvers...
BTW thanks for posting it all here...

Normally a 10mm would be more than sufficient for Black Bear. I would rethink this and take a 454 Casull or one of the .460s or the 500 Smith. I load my Blackhawk .45 Colt to near Casull power for such situations. Nasty thumper (I load them in nickel brass so as not confuse them and load them in my SAA)
Revolvers don’t have slides for hair to jam in, though they don’t have the capacity of a semi auto.
