Whoever opened it sent it, or knows who did.
Why would anyone open a ‘suspicious package’ not addressed to them, set it out like this and take a picture unless they knew it wasn’t a real bomb?

The ‘Fake Bombs’ have all the style, earmarks, and fingerprints of a ‘Social Justice Warrior’... not of a real technical bomber.

Pipe bombs require a detonator. Both wires go to detonator, which is planted inside explosive. Both wires go through the same hole, unless you are really, really stupid. And the detonator wires are best no spliced near the detonator itself. So the leads that came with the detonator ARE the wires. And they are tiny, and not a giant red wire.
Also, why a timer sent through the mail? The US mail is not exactly reliable. What, set it for 2 weeks? And hope nobody opens it before it time’s out?
Any effective explosive device sent through the mail would be rigged with a spring loaded switch to make contact when opened. Timer is absolutely worthless, and an obvious hoax.
Whole thing is a big hoax.

I shouldn’t jump to conclusions 4 hours after the event, but the perp is highly unlikely to be a “right wing nut”. The fact that the person can’t spell John Brennan’s name right shows they don’t watch political TV stations. If they don’t watch the news, they would not know who their opponents are, to target them.
And right-of-center Americans (Tea Party types, MAGA Republicans, regular Republicans and Independents) do not do messy things. We pick up after ourselves at rallies, do not deface posters by opponents, and behave cordially to those we don’t agree with.
This would not have been done by any sane person on the Right. And virtually all insane people are on the Left.

Lots of odd sized mail is not canceled. The only mail that is routinely canceled is the mail handed to a clerk (this was obviously not) or mail that can be sent through a sorting machine (not possible in this case).
