I didn't even think of the lack of personalities as part of the problem.

Then again, I stopped following baseball after a strike or two back.

I remember a boring period in baseball, maybe the latter 1980s, some people at work said they were going to the BoSox game. People not going pointed out the lackluster aspect, and the reply was "Oh, we're mostly going to do The Wave."

I probably should mention that ticket prices were much more reasonable, too.

MLB was superceded by the NFL a while ago in popular perception as "America's Game" - now the NBA might get more press attention than either of them.

I really don't know what the solution is - baseball is a sport that rewards patience and appreciation of the little things, and those attributes really don't describe a couple of generations raised on first-person shooter video games. I'd expect attendance will continue to fall.

Below is the scene from a Royals-Rays April rainout-makeup game earlier this season. Barely a thousand people showed up for an MLB game.

Serves ‘em right for getting rid of Nolan.

Even Major League Soccer is drawing more.

Yeh Gator right? I remember the opening of ‘The Ballpark at Arlington’ not so long ago. It’s a beautiful park almost similar to Camden Yard in Baltimore. To discard it so soon is a crime and a huge waste for some baseball games. WTH.

Late last summer, I went up to Boston.

Could not get a ticket to Fenway Park. Every game sold out.

Scalpers wanted $2-300. Nope.

Baseball was my passion until I graduated from high school.

Unfortunately, I did not have the bat speed or the outfielder arm strength to compete for a baseball scholarship at any of the top college teams.

Once I stopped trying to improve my game, watching baseball games became unbearably boring, and I completely lost interest in Major League Baseball.

Baseball was/is my first love & I was good enough at it to be scouted by the MBL, but the games are too long. It’s become unwatchable.

The game needs to be about 2 hours long, not 3 & 4 hours. The first thing to do is cut the game to 7 innings. People don’t have the time or attention span to invest 4 hours on a work night watching baseball.

I haven’t been to a baseball game in decades, but I’m still a big fan.

Every game is available on TV. Why would I want to spend all that money and drive 100 miles there and back? I wouldn’t.

One of the reasons owners can pay those exorbitant salaries is because the huge amount of TV revenues they get. And a good team will usually draw good crowds. Good teams that can’t can move to other cities.

Notice how the owners are getting smarter about negotiating contracts. Yeah, there are a handful or two of players who can command $20+ million dollars a year, but there are also a lot of players who can’t and, at least for the last couple of years, there are a lot more players who have to get buy with a piddling $1-5M per year. I also like how we’re seeing fewer super long-term contracts because they seldom are worth the investment.

Play ball!

Wow!

And, instantly put 30 “Closers” on the unemployment line!

Lol, that’s why it will not happen, but the game has become too much of a grind.

Baseballs advantage right now is the lack of interest in NFL thugs. Sounds like they’re doing a great job of mucking it up. Wasn’t too long ago people were tuning out of MLB for similar reasons.

Maybe people have just reached a boiling point with filthy thugs passing as celebrities.

Two problems. Baseball owners are not willing to spend money on their teams anymore. And the ticket prices and beer prices are outrageous.

NASCAR has had the same problem. However, attendance has stabilized, and it is starting to put a decent product on the field. And these drivers will walk up into the stands and sign autographs, embracing the fans whereas NFL,MLB is very stand-offish, not embracing the fans.

You piss of the fans, they walk away. Doesn’t matter the sport or entertainment type.

Baseball’s biggest problem is its almost total lack of interesting characters. It seems like every single player today is named Eduardo Perez and hit .261 with 8 HR last year.

I spent all day at Dover Speedway in the rain. Walked around the fan zone, watched an awesome free Charlie Daniels Band concert, got in the seats in time to watch the track dryers all while staring down the barrel of a 10 hour drive for a business trip starting immediately after the race.

The race was postponed until Monday. A buddy said the crowd Monday was pretty large.

We’re already making our plans to go back in October
