That’s actually very sad to hear, but I understand getting burnt out on something you put so much into.
I know what you mean about bat speed, but I think the reality is that with the speed of pitching these days most guys guess pitches, and hope they can at least foul off what they guess wrong on. You have to have incredibly fast reflexes and bat speed to be able to sit back and wait. I don’t think most major league ballplayers do that.
Was a big fan of MLB for a long time. No longer. When most of the teams went pro homo a few years back that was it for me. But its not just MLB but spectator sports in general. My interest waned about 10 t0 15 years ago to the point I check scores occasionally but nothing else anymore. Tonight the local basketball team is in a game 7 elimination match. I wont watch but hear how they did tomorrow and say oh well they lost or thats nice they won and that will be it.
“Baseballs biggest problem is its almost total lack of interesting characters. It seems like every single player today is named Eduardo Perez and hit .261 with 8 HR last year.”
Irrespective of the names, I agree with you. Whether you liked him or not, Reggie Jackson was one who brought charisma to the game.
Don’t know about the rest of the world, but Chicago’s been cold and rainy all “Spring” - hard to get turnout for a mediocre team when the venue isn’t even pleasant.
Maybe the White Sox need to sponsor a “global warming” promotion of some sort.
I was a child of the 50's. Like most kids, I could recite the starting lineup and stats of every team. Warm summer nights listening to the games on radio. Sand lot games every day but Sunday, though I was always last chosen to a side. However baseball left my life as I grew older until I was able to relive the pure joy and excitement of the game through my six year old grandson and his teammates. The boys of summer will always live as long as there are old men and grandsons.
Was there another player strike? Gave up on MLB at the first one in the early ‘80s.
Taking the games off broadcast TV and making people subscribe to a pay channel to watch MLB games has taken its toll. I used to be an avid baseball fan. Now I dont care anymore. Ive pretty much lost interest altogether.
Weather is a factor. The early April weather has actually gotten worse in the Midwest. Add to that weather extremes in the southeast.
> The first thing to do is cut the game to 7 innings. <
That’s a bit drastic. But you’ve got a good point. I read an article maybe 10 years ago (can’t remember where) where the author made some suggestions for speeding up the game.
- No new-pitcher warm-up. His first throw counts.
- A foul ball counts as a third strike.
- Take your base after 3 balls.
Etc.
But purists would never go for anything like that.
But the owner is a schmuck, the food sucks and the Trop is a sh!thole.
I’m in Cuyahoga County, where roads are crumbling. Is there any rational reason county money is spent on stadiums? It’s a perfect example of where stockholders should fund the endeavors, if the owners can’t or won’t.
Before the game, I wanted to get Willie McCovey's autograph. Willie McCovey was playing for the Padres, and no matter how loud I yelled at him, he ignored me. Maybe he had his reasons, but I never liked McCovey after that.
On the other hand, Joe Ferguson was playing for the Cardinals and he gave me his autograph.
Great descriptions of the game!
It is drastic. I just can’t think of anything that would speed up the game for the modern audience.
I grew up listening to the games on the radio. Loved it. Dad and I would listen while fishing, working on the cars, just putzing around in the garage. Never really cared for TV games.
Now, me and the grandkids do the same. We are building a small sailboat together. But we always listen to the games.
Once per season, for a treat, we will go to a game. Just too expensive to go more often.
True.
The A-Rods, Jeters, McGwires, Cansecos, Sosas, Reggie Jacksons, Tom Glavines of the world are gone.
EVERYBODY’s in the “front row”
Reggie was the Mohammed Ali of baseball. Lol
Wait? The Rangers are getting a new stadium... again!? WTH?
