The Spanish Flu had people wearing masks. Trouble is viruses are quite small and can pass though. Another reason the Spanish Flu killed so many is that viruses were unknown at the time. This virus has already been mapped so a cure is a real possibility.
How does a Chicom nurse get that 90,000 number...?
I think it would depend upon the virus, and what environments the ‘surface’ had been exposed to, for how long, etc.
Fortunately I wear glasses and I thank the lord I never listened to my mother.........
Wearing glasses or even goggles isn’t going to protect you, if you forget and touch your eyes with buggy fingers.
I was in the grocery yesterday, and gave myself a little experiment before I left - how long could I go without inadvertently touching some part of my face?
It was about a minute-and-a-half, after I commandeered a shopping cart and entered.
I think Vigilance would aid us more in this possible scenario than ‘equipment’.
Part of wearing a mask and eyewear is to remind you not to touch your face. Yeah - hard to do. (Just thinking about it - now I have to itch my nose!)
That’s exactly what happened to me :-)
I had no mask to ‘remind’ me; but you could easily come home, take your gear off, and touch your face before washing your hands. Many viruses can live a long time on surfaces, especially on human skin.
I think the frequent and vigorous hand washing/rubbing under running water is one of our best first defenses.
Three things my mother taught me"
1. Stop doing that or you'll go blind......(That's why I now wear glasses)
2. Keep you fingers out of your nose
3. Keep your fingers out of your eyes, especially if they have been in your nose......
4. Just because you read it on the internet doesn't mean it's true.......
LOL!
Good question. If NYC was experiencing a viral outbreak and quarantined, would we expect a nurse at Bellevue to know how many people in the city were infected?
