I have other means for long range. Including a 7mm Mauser and various other 30-06s in bolt and semiautomatic configurations. In a fairly clear environment I hit nary a tree. None over 22” and none so heavy that I can’t carry. But In my tree packed environment I have often carried nothing but a scope-less revolver and made it work.

Used hunting rifles are a bargain, generally. If I were to spend $1000 on a hunting rifle, I’d take a 60 - 70 year old Winchester over anything new.
