Please imagine for one moment you are driving down a lonely highway at dusk. Suddenly, in the oncoming lane, green front brake lights begin snapping on in rapid sucession. You are alerted to the bull moose crossing from their side and instead of smashing into it and dying like so many before you, you manage to brake, swerve and avoid the animal entirely. ..
Imagine you are crossing at a pedestrian light and you see a vehicle coming at speed. For an instant you wonder whether he has a foot on the brake? Then his green lights come on. Yes he has a foot on the brake. Is that oncoming vehicle about to turn left in front of you? Or does he have his foot on the brake? Yes he is stopped and his front brake light is green. It will go out once he proceedsl...
I hope that all freepers will feel free to read and consider my paper. I would gratefully welcome insightful and carefully considered analysis both for and against the proposition that green front brake lights would save lives.
I have also heard proposals for the brake lights to flash in proportion to how hard the driver is braking. That is, if the brakes are lightly applied, the brake lights (or just the high center-mounted brake light) flashes slowly. As the driver applies more brake pressure, the light(s) flash faster and faster, and are solidly lit with full brake pressure. This, too, would provide more information to following drivers to know how hard the car in front is applying the brakes and anticipate accordingly.
I have never, ever before heard of this proposal to put Green brake lights on the front of a vehicle. To me, Green means "Go," not stop, and would cause more confusion than lessen potential collisions.
However, I think all of these proposals are outdated with today's cars with active collision avoidance radar installed.
"Please imagine for one moment..."
How about I imagine a Free Republic without assclowns posting complete nonsense from their slimy blog to get a few hits to their pathetic website?
Been here for five months and posting something that’s fourteen years old and very wordy is your first post?
Welcome to FR.
As a retired civil engineer specializing in highway and traffic enginerring, methinks this idea would do much more harm than good. It would serve no purpose except for pedestrians, who would likely get a false sense of security and then get run over by paying more attention to the light than learning to judge the speed of the approaching vehicle. And turning vehicles? Why would a driver approaching pay any attention? The turning vehicle doesn’t necessarily brake and must yield the right of way anyhow. Has such a system ever been tested anywhere?
Just my two cents based on my over 50 years of experience.
Somebody needs a hobby. This is stupid! A moose? A pedestrian? I don't care what color any light is or where it's mounted, you never ever step out in front of a vehicle until it slows way down or stops and you'd better have eye contact with the driver.
Example: Many people ride their brakes, and this will give the fools who walk out in front of moving vehicles a false sense of security. Oh gee, he's braking, as they go under the wheels.
The cheese in the refrigerator turned green before I was finished with 10% of this article.
make the horn button apply the brakes and peace will be had by all... š
Time to take a REAL stand.
Let them get away with this and they will start ‘working’ on changing sequence/color of traffic lights because people are too used to seeing them this way.
Kind of like when they ‘convinced’ us that people didn’t see RED fire engines with their sirens and lights
OR
One day ‘they’ decided that Rs shouldn’t be ‘blue states’ so now they are red.
Imagine sitting at a Red Light and being a bit distracted while listening to Joementia Biden on the Radio.
You look up and see a Green Light across the Road and think the Light has changed. You pull out and BOOM.
The last thing you hear before you die is the voice of Joementia Biden the groping Pedo calling you a Racist White Supremacist.
A very similar idea was presented by a school girl during the Carter pResidency. It went nowhere.
Think of the harmful unintended consequences of putting green lights on the fronts of millions of cars.
“I saw a green light and I put the pedal to the medal...I thought the traffic light had turned green....that’s when I got T-boned.”
It’s a dumb idea that will never work and never be adopted.
you’ve got too much time on your hands. An extremely important engineering term, KISS. A green light up front does not provide valuable information. If you need to spend so much time trying to convince everyone of a good idea, it’s not a good idea.
Green just about always means it is safe tp proceed. So someone oncoming may be slowing to turn in front of you.one may think that driver is saying it is ok to drive past them....purple and an amber blinker would be less confusing in my mind.
. I suggest purple light. It is not bright but it is totally different than any other car signal color.
Another suggestion is that motorcycle headlights be circumscribed with 3 or 4 light points. At night in a rear view mirtor one could surmise that they are being followed by a motorcycle instead of a car with one light out...or could be being followed by two bikes rolling abreast. Just my 2 cents.
Freegards.
The four stages of acceptance:
1. This is worthless nonsense.
2. This is an interesting, but perverse, point of view.
3. This is true, but quite unimportant.
4. I always said so.”

I guess Iām OK with this. But for years I have felt that there should be a yellow, light perhaps both of the rear turn signals, that come on when you lift your foot off the gas pedal and before you put on the break. So lift your foot yellow, put on the brake red.

Good luck.

Green means go. This is stupid.
