A lot of folks are wondering just how that dumpster made its way into the live shot. If the wind blew it that far, why didn’t it continue out into the street (apparently came down an alley next to the hotel). The Weather Channel bills itself as “America’s Most Trusted Network,” but they’ve pull the “leaning into the wind stunt” so often, I just ignore their field reports.
Fact is, you’ve got TV mets who arrive into an area they know little about and simply stage the “eye of the storm” live shot, while discussing the same weather info being discussed by their studio crew and the NWS.
But Cantore’s got a sweet gig going. Still the star at TWC, and pulling down the biggest paycheck by far. We’ll see if that lasts; NBC unloaded TWC for a fire sale price (about $300 million) to a communications company run by former comedian Byron Allen (the network paid close to $5 billion for the network and website). Mr. Allen is putting most of his money into cheaper, reality programming. The on-camera met staff is a fraction of what it once was; many of the studio meteorologists who appeared over the weekend (such as Jeff Morrow) are former full-timers at the network who are now per-diem employees. They get paid when they work, no healthcare or other benefits.
Cantore still attracts viewers, so his position seems safe for now. But it’s a fair bet that Byron Allen will try to cut his pay when contract comes up for renewal. That’s the new media model. Plenty of younger and cheaper talent available, like Jim’s current girlfriend.
That one is still my favorite. LOL
@BigRedDumpster has its own Twitter page now. LOL!
99% of everything on tv is fake.
Check out #19!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
The ‘reporters’ find a windy spot or a puddle, the buildings would make the wind faster. If you are smart you would not stand there as the passerby’s were not.
These guys could come to my house right now and get some good footage. I’m in Mobile and we’re getting hammered by a buttload of rain and some wind.
I used to do traffic reports for a local FM station in a market they will remain nameless. We pulled the same stunt on April Fools Day debuting our new “traffic copter”. Most fun I ever had in radio. We still crack up over how many people we fooled that day. Lots of calls from listeners wanting to know where the bird was hangered.
And frozen turkeys!
