Cowboys on cattle drives used to be called crackers because a lot of them used whips. Down around Tampa Fl they were going to name a route used on cattle drives Cracker Trail or something similar. The NAACP got involved and claimed it made black people feel uncomfortable, so the politicians killed the idea.
