Why would a US President, in time of crisis, say things he doesn’t really mean? Did he have his fingers crossed?
Well, he SHOULD have meant it...because it is true. Aggressive leaders like Putin are not dissuaded from action by the threat of monetary problems - that’s part of the cost-benefit analysis, and the monetary cost almost always pales in comparison to the gain (or prevention of loss) that exists when you’re talking about acquiring territory or taking an opposing nation down as a potential threat.
Putin chose wisely, especially considering the degree of ineptitude all across the highest levels of our government. Yep, elections have consequences (that’s the one and only thing that Obama ever said with which I agree). Doesn’t mean that I like what he’s doing, or what the effects will be over the next several years or decades, but it was a smart move.
A smarter move would have been to approach Putin and have a frank discussion of why our nations shouldn’t be enemies or rivals but, because of many common interests, should actually be allies or at least friendly. We are both continent-sized, resource rich, nuclear powers; we are both highly advanced technologically and will stay in that position because we have highly-educated populations (well, enough people are to keep advancing science and weapons development, it certainly doesn’t apply to everyone); we are both mostly white, though with substantial minorities (some of which are not particularly happy about how they’ve been treated over the years); and we both face the same two very potent (or potentially very potent) enemies/adversaries and will for at least the next 100 years: China and the radical Islamists. The only thing that really has kept us apart is ideology from 1917 until about 1991 (and that has a legacy - it’ll take a generation of leaders who grew up in the post-Cold War era to truly change attitudes). Prior to WW1, we were friendly with the Russians - they sold us Alaska (you don’t sell land to an adversary or a nation you believe might threaten you someday), and we leased land in central NJ to the Russian Army to test their artillery ammunition with new DuPont powders. No, we’re never going to be best friends, but a smart leader would immediately begin to diffuse tensions with Russia and start the process of cooperation on certain issues that would lead to growing trust. Maybe in a generation or two we actually could be allies - after all, now we’re allied with Germany and Japan...anyone in the middle of WW2 would have said that such a thing was not only impossible but crazy, and yet here we are.
That all said, Biden is an incompetent moron...and was such on the best day of his life, let alone with dementia.
