There is no such thing as “fossil fuels”, but there are hydrocarbon fuels, most of which were formed by abiotic means. Methane, the simplest and most basic of the hydrocarbon fuels, and the major component of natural gas, was present when the earth was formed, and is a constituent of the “dirty snowballs” that many meteors are composed of.
Earth is bombarded on a daily basis with these pieces of debris left over from the formation of the Solar System.
At the formation of the earth, there was no free oxygen, only a mixture of carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane and water vapor, all existing as hot gases. Only when the surface of the earth cooled enough for water to condense from the water vapor, was it possible for a multitude of water-based chemical reactions to take place, many of them highly complex, eventually resulting in a primitive living organism that could convert carbon dioxide (dissolved in the water), water itself, ammonia, and some small measure of methane, into the end products of carbohydrate compounds and free diatomic oxygen, with side reactions that also produced amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. This excess of oxygen, a highly corrosive element, further broke down ammonia, forming free nitrogen, a much less reactive element than oxygen, and additional quantities of water. Ammonia will burn, much like methane, in the presence of oxygen and enough energy to ignite it, forming additional water, and various forms of nitric oxide, generically included as “NOx”, as well as free nitrogen. That fact that today our atmosphere is composed of some 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and a number of other gases, one of which is carbon dioxide, is what makes human life possible. The presence of green growing plant life is what makes this whole cycle work.
Therefore, the “green revolution” must be focused on aiding and propagating to the greatest degree possible the ability of making green growing plants propagate up to the level the earth can support. To do this, water, carbon dioxide and various nutrients applied by fertilizers have to be available in sufficient quantity to assure optimal growing conditions.
Burning of hydrocarbon compounds releases water vapor and - carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide in an active growing environment is not, and by definition cannot be, a pollutant. So a “carbon neutral” agenda is in fact an anti-green strategy, and ultimately self-defeating. We actually NEED a slight excess of CO2 above current levels to assure full utilization of this miraculous and marvelous phenomenon, because right now, plants are at almost starvation level for carbon dioxide.
It is our DUTY to employ the use of hydrocarbon fuels to generate not only power and light, but the additional supply of carbon dioxide. As the growth of plant life prospers, so does humanity.
