I just boiled it down to “why should we believe them?”

I suspect most FReepers would be happy enough if the United States actually was "completely neutral" in this conflict.
But that's no longer the way of the United States.
That the US government is demonstrating a far greater interest in foreigners in Ukraine than inside its own "borders" (a word I use loosely) should make you and everyone else here smell a rat.

My friends I am going to read a Norm Chomsky book after I’m done reading the current one on Pat Tillman. I’m sure there will be more than a few of his ideas we can agree with. Tillman wanted to meet him and talk as both he and brother Kevin were against the Iraq war. The writer is Jon Krakauer(Into Thin Air/Into the Wild). A fine writer who I could see really had it out for the Bush’s and his people.
Tillman lived life on the edge, taking chances. He gravitated towards danger and volunteered to face death on the front lines. His big mistake was entrusting his life to superiors who could not be counted on to do the right or smart thing. He paid for it with his life. He chose wrong.
As for Krakauer one cannot deny his talents. Half way thru the book I considered not finishing it. As many lies as he claimed were out there I can’t believe him much either. Today it’s Ukraine. What will it be in November? More Covid? Another Hurricane Sandy? All I know is that too many will wait for the official response and take it as gospel.
I'm not suggesting that the Russians are the "good guys" at all.
We don't have a dog in this fight. That a country as morally and financially bankrupt as our own is intervening in a corner of the world far from ours should make any genuine conservative stand up in opposition to it.
Call it "America Last" or simply "late-stage" capitalism; our efforts to stick our beak in that part of the world has nothing to do with "conservatism".

Absolutely, and in a way, the situation leading up to Ukraine was very similar to the Cold War, with one side wanting to live their lives in peace, but finds itself constantly being harassed by the other side which is trying to impose Left Wing tyranny on the world.
