“And why any conservative should welcome the resurrection of John Kennedy, Jr. is completely beyond me”.
I'm not a Conservative. I'm an American.

That might have not happened if we hadn’t passed the 17th Amendment and turned Senators into publicity seeking political careerists. In the older system States through their appointed senators would not have wanted to give up their power & influence. One the 17th was passed the state as an institution could be ignored. After the 17th a senator was now nothing more than just a congressman-at-large. The state corporately meant nothing it was just a corral to keep voters in.

I wish I still had this but some FReeper researched and show that prior to the passage of the 17th Amendment there were very few multiterm senators. Probably the reason being that state legislators saw themselves eventually in that seat as did other state grandees, so there was state internal competition.

>>The monarchy represents the nation but is above politics

Such forbearance is going to be quite difficult for Charles III.

Just how do they generate revenue...

Snowglobes and other memorabilia? I'm sure the castle has a lot of gift shops. Like throw pillows. I better not let my wife know about those or I'll end up with 12 of them on my living room couch.

Maybe the new King will have his own toothpaste line.

Shoelaces ironed? Now that’s being squared away. I’m glad my Marine Corps drill instructors didn’t get that anal in boot camp.

This system is what the signers of the Declaration of Independence were rejecting by the assertion that “all men are created equal”

This ideal has been a cornerstone of our country, but as we have seen people are not, in reality created equal. They should be treated equally, but that is also not true, nor has it ever been.

In practice, people tend to naturally sort themselves into social levels; some are more able to be successful than others. In America, our government tries to provide some sort of equalization with varying degrees of success. In a monarchy, it is the royal family that attempts to provide order and stability. Human nature, being what it is, has always found some people to follow and admire, and place on a pedestal. We have done that in America with politicians, business leaders, athletes and entertainers.

As I see more and more what we have done with choosing our government representatives, we can't really claim to have any sort of high ground intellectually, or politically. I do find it interesting to see how these royals have responded to the responsibilities placed on them only by the happenstance of birth. Elizabeth II seemed to be remarkable in her discipline and focus on the role placed upon her. We'll get to see how Charles III fits into a role that he has been waiting to fill for more than half a century.

I read he demands toothpaste be put on his toothbrush. If that is true, good God, I feel sorry for England. Can you imagine? A grown man must have the toothpaste put on his brush like he’s a 2 year old. Do they have to wipe his butt as well?
= = =

Better have two different people do those two jobs.

If it was the same person, they might get mixed up.

True, but teams if PR people couldn’t help Harry, Andrew or Charles, so I suspect the Queen didn’t have any major vices and had the fortitude to keep up a well polished public image. Unlike her offspring.

YES YES and YES
Exactly.
They are like the Kardashians without the trashiness.
Famous for spending lots of money and living the high life.
But no real responsibilities.
The very definition of “privilege”.

Phony talk there. The argument you reference is based on a variety of assumptions about the value (or is it “value”) the UK receives from tasks performed by the monarchs.
And please note that there is not inheritance tax due on the Queen’s estate. It passes intact to Charles; supposedly this is “worth it” since the monarchs (Elizabeth II and now, Charles) pay income tax.
But you go right on defending the welfare state over in the UK.

You’re undoubtedly correct.
Granddaughter and I had dinner and Trivial Pursuit with a friend and his two daughters who have dual citizenship, since their Mum is a Brit.
Mum was in NYC on business, sad to say. They called an early evening to prepare for the Queen’s funeral this AM. Lovely family.

They did this for Diana’s funeral cortege. I think it’s tradition and populist feeling.
