NFL players getting suspended for gambling are suspended because it’s illegal for them to do so and it’s in every NFL contract, it almost always results in at least a one-year suspension.
The NBA and MLB have had major gambling scandals, the NBA had a scandal involving a referee who was gambling on games and the Pete Rose story in MLB is well known.
The major reason why the NFL is the most popular professional sport in the USA is because of gambling, the way to bet football is easily understood and the games for the most part on 1-2 days not every day like the NBA and MLB, which makes them hard to follow.
The NFL’s connection to DraftKings and FanDuel are proof of their acceptance of gambling and the owners know the reason for their popularity is gambling.
Allegations involving one of the best golfers of the most recent generation of golfers is a big story and would be reported on by SI regardless of their situation.

It’s his money so what?
It’s not a big deal unless he was betting on matches he was involved in, that’s a major red flag.
One of the allegations is he tried to make a $400,000 bet on the Ryder Cup while he was playing in the Ryder Cup. If that allegation was proven to be true, he would be toast as a professional golfer and a product endorser.
The other allegations involved insider stock trading and got off because he rolled over on his partner, the partner was Billy Walters who wrote the book, Walters ended up going to prison, something that would have happened to Mickelson if didn’t roll over on Walters.
Interesting. Clearly an intelligent guy. I don’t gamble at all, since there’s nothing I can’t overdo.
I like how bankers/brokers are more crooked in his estimation.
Seems true to me…
People will be getting an eye opening experience rather soon via our economy.
Don’t forget that Mickelson is said to be a Republican, which might explain why an ultra-liberal media outlet is publishing unsubstantiated, self-serving allegations against him by some felon.
Should be the lead story on ESPN too (for the same reason)!
What bothers me the most is how prolific the opportunities to gamble have become with all these advertised gambling apps that offer you x numbers of bids or spins, just to get you addicted.
I remember years ago when the first casino battle took place in Detroit that was finally won by the Indian tribe (yea right) that built it. Now there are casinos all over the state.
I have no problem with legalized gambling and casinos, the USA is one of the few countries that doesn’t allow gambling everywhere, especially when the Government itself operates probably the biggest gambling racket in the country.
How many states have lotteries and the recent mega millions jackpot that went over 1.5 billion was advertised everywhere and was on major media outlets all over the place.
If it’s acceptable for the Government to operate lotteries which primarily prey on low-income people, why should they have a monopoly on gambling.
I’ve been over that guy for a while. The last straw was when he hit the moving ball at the U. S. Open, something a kid would do at the Putt-Putt course.
The only sport I trust anymore is pro wrestling
If Phil wants to gamble one billion dollars, it’s his money. It may explain why he sold his private jet…. And why he jumped to the LIV Tour.
All over Europe! In Italy betting shops abound. If you want to bet a three-way parlay on Italian Division III soccer, have at it! Five Euro nets you five hundred.
There are hundreds if not thousands of other things SI can go after. Phil is long gone from the PGA. And he isn’t the only one to be gambling on tour. That’s what’s missing here. SI can cover it if they desire, but they might want to include the entire picture.
Sometimes Phil is his own worst enemy.
I only experienced that in the UK but you’re right from what I understand not only all Europe, Asia, Central America, South America and the Caribbean
Does any other professional golfer gamble on matches they are playing in ??
That is one of the allegations against Michelson along with engaging in insider trading of stocks which is also a big deal, the headline is meant to get your attention but the substance of the article makes some harsh allegations and that is the big story.
The book isn’t even out ye, what’s been reported so far is all that is released so far.
It is his own money but but betting on matches he’s involved in and engaging in insider stock trading is a big deal and those are the allegations
No doubt Phil is one of the greatest, but he is no way near that golly gee, apple pie, family guy image that was portrayed.
Truth!
