Maybe using the emergency broadcast system would have been a good idea. That way you tell people what to do such as which direction to evacuate. EBS was used recently in my area for a microburst and it helped us prepare for it. You then train people that when the siren goes off to turn on the radio for directions.

Even if the sirens worked, they still couldn’t get out because the police wasn’t letting anyone out

This person will be amply rewarded for his service to the deep state and their associated land developers.

Bull. They had an app as well. They could sound the alarms to get attention. Send a warning on the app like they did recently by mistake and scared everyone. People would have seen and smelled the smoke.

They had one. Remember Hawaii was told to prepare for a nuke attack BY ACCIDENT.

Serious leftard retardation going on there, if you left the house at 11:00 at night it would be DARK out and you could see fire(s) miles away. The real question going on is what are they covering up, or maybe who in this case.

Didn’t HI issue a fake incoming nuclear attack alert a few years ago? Why couldn’t they issue a wild fire alert?

It is revealing that the native Obama trained witch doctors running things are stupid and incompetent. The unwarranted conceit of native superiority over white man logical thinking is on display in this tragedy.

"The more I read about this guy...the less I believe he was actually qualified for the job."

Without being sarcastic or satirical, I can guarantee you that qualifications for a job are not requirements of the Democrat Party. This is absolutely SOP for them.

From the article:

“The fire can be a mile or more from your house, but in a minute or two, it can be at your house,” said Fire Assistant Chief Jeff Giesea. “Burning airborne materials can light fires a great distance away from the main body of fire.”

Missing from the article is information on the wind. When did the wind increase to 80 mph? The 80 mph wind caused the fire’s destructiveness. What else could explain the total burnout of such a large area in a time too short for people to escape?

Did the emergency services take actions assuming more normal winds? Were the high winds a freak occurrence?

I watched several YouTube videos in the last few days that were filmed the day of the fire. One guy has posted four or five videos. He lived there. There was no panic. The middle of the afternoon there were electrical lines down all over Lahaina. It was VERY windy. People were walking around. Every business was closed up. There was already a line of cars standing still headed south on Front Street.

The fire was across the highway on the northeast side of town.
What was really interesting was that this guy was walking by buildings that burned to the ground less than 12 hours later. Like the elementary school that was right near the water.

He continued to record videos into the night.

Based on the videos I watched, the people in downtown Lahaina didn’t think the fire would jump the highway. It wasn’t until sometime in the mid afternoon when the wind gusts increased so much that flying embers started structures west of the highway.

It was around 2:30 pm when the first houses up across the highway started on fire. This is based on a YouTube video posted by an up country home owner. They witnessed the start of the fire a few hundred yards from their house. They lived across the highway and pretty far up hill from town. Their neighbors house caught on fire. They packed up their pets and as they were pulling away their house was catching fire.
I watched this video on YouTube last Saturday morning. I went back in my history to show it to my wife later that day and it was gone.

We have such early warning systems here in southern Oregon.. millions of dollars spent on all the bells and whistles..
It does no good if not used. The overpriced politically correct BITCH in charge decided 3500 old people in manufactured home parks would get “confused.” They had 6 hours to warn us that EVERYTHING a few miles away was being incinerated.
The first we knew of the Alameda fire were flames coming down our culdesac.

I was able to get one neighbor to leave early. Everyone else just laughed and said if there was a problem, the news would say so.
Like hell!

No lawyer around here will touch a case against the county.

“I went back in my history to show it to my wife later that day and it was gone.”

Informative post. Thanks!

What do you make of the removal of the video from youtube?

Here’s a new favorite quote that I found a few weeks ago:

“When truth is replaced by silence, the silence is a lie”

In this Maui mess there are going to be hundreds of truths and lies flying around, including lies of silence.

Typical inept Democrat official. Sirens would have awoken people to get up and check outside, the smoke would be clearly seen. They would have had hours instead of minutes to escape.

The guy had NO experience, kinda like Pete Buttegeig has no transportation experience.

You can bet Maui is just about 100% liberal and have been virtue signaling about global warming for twenty years……”global crisis, inevitable disasters ahead, beach erosion”. Blah, blah, blah. Believing that a global warming apocalypse is upon us, why not invest in a climate “wild fire” emergency warning system to actually save people’s lives……. After all, it’s the #1 cause of destructive forest and vegetation fires, right? They want to kill cows, end fossil fuel, tax people to death, but not save their lives…..Why? Because they know it’s a lie.

“Never understood the modern use of sirens.”

This incompetent DemocRat should have pulled out some old Civil Defense manuals. He would have seen that sirens can make different kinds of noises. A steady rising and falling tone meant Take Cover and a quivering tone meant All Clear.

In this case, one tone could have meant Tsunami! and another could have meant Fire!

But, this DemocRat would think, “How would my stupid subjects know the difference?” Buddy, the citizens are not as stupid as you are. Have an education and training program, conduct periodic tests and training using the siren tones.

Thank you, that was interesting. But I mean something else: simple human speech. Of course, that would create a disparate impact on non-English speakers, so we couldn’t have that. Even if you miss the subtleties between consonants, I’d bet people would have no trouble distinguishing between fire (”Siyer! Siyer!”) and Tsunami (”soo-ah-ii!”) Hell, “Mauka” (”to the hills!”) and “Mikai” (”to the sea!”) vary only by their easily distinguished vowels sound as it is.
