In Roman times, the area was known as Judea and was ruled by Jewish kings

One clarification: after the death of Herod in 4 BC, the lineage of Jewish kings ended in Judea and the Romans ruled the province through their governors (though the Romans did allow Herod II to rule Judea in 41-44 AD). Pontius Pilate was one of the more famous Roman governors of Judea.

After Egypt and the surrounding countries fought wars with Israel and lost, any land won by Israel becomes theirs. It is a moot point in my opinion who was there previously.

If the “Palestinians” want it back they can fight for it - which they did. And they should lose this war too.

Too bad Israel gave their conquered Sinai back to Egypt. The middle of it would be a good place to move Gaza to.

The province of Judea was renamed by the Roman Emporer Hadrian to punish the Jews for revolting. He renamed it Syria Palestina as a deliberate punishment and insult. The name was derived from the ancient, extinct enemy of Israel, the Philistines.
